Hello and welcome back to another edition of The Rimfire Report! This series is all about rimfire firearms, ammunition, sports, and pretty much everything else rimfire-related. The Ruger 10/22 is one of the most if not the most popular rimfire rifles on the market today. While it may not be the most accurate, the lightest, or maybe even the coolest, the humble 10/22 is an almost ubiquitous firearm in the gun community for its popularity alone. Today we’ll be going over my 3 best accessories/mods for your 10/22 rifle, carbine, or pistol.

The Rimfire Report: The 3 Best Accessories/Mods to Add to Your 10/22

“Nyet! Rifle is fine!” I hear some of you screaming. Well, I don’t disagree with you. I grew up shooting a bone stock Ruger 10/22 carbine with 10 round rotary magazines until I was 16 years old. There is a lot to be said about the beautiful simplicity that the 10/22 carbine offers. However, like any guy, I often like to make things my own – especially if I have more than one. These mods/accessories are by no means necessary to make your 10/22 a great firearm, but I do find that a lot of these either enhance the shooting experience or make the rifle function better overall.

1. Stocks

The standard Ruger 10/22 stock used to be a nice walnut carbine length stock. Any stock for a 10/22 will use the same single attachment point on the bottom and sometimes a barrel band depending on the model. While standard rifle stocks are fine and most of us probably trained as youths with that style of stock, modern times and shooting practices have shown that pistol grips tend to be the preferred style of choice when it comes to rifles for their improved ergonomics in various shooting stances. This is why stocks would be my #1 pick for one of the best accessories/mods for your 10/22. Here are a few of my personal recommendations below.

• Magpul Hunter X-22 Stock – Simple, modern design with M-LOK attachment points and multiple options for slings.

 

• Boyds Gunstocks AT-ONE 10/22 Stock – Blends the traditional with the modern with a fully adjustable cheekpiece and butt pad with rubberized grip inserts and a high-quality finish.

• Samson Manufacturing B-TM Folding Stock – This one is probably my favorite of the bunch but it comes at a price. The B-TM folding stock is constructed well and I hear it exempts you from being pitied as a fool of some sort.

2. Charging Handles

This is one I normally leave out on things like AR-15 rifles. Charging handles on AR-15s are really only meant to check the chamber, lock it back or clear malfunctions. For normal operation, sending the bolt home should always be accomplished with the bolt release/catch. Not so on the 10/22. The charging/bolt handle on the 10/22 is an integral part of the operation of the firearm and having something that is a bit more ergonomic/functional is almost a must in my book. Here are 3 of my top recommendations for 10/22 charging handles I think make the rifle easier to manipulate.

• TANDEMKROSS “Advantage” Charging Handle – This one is great because it can take your bone stock 10/22 (like the one I used as a child) and in one simple move add both a pic-rail and a left-side charging handle in one piece. It’s great for lefties who don’t want to spend the extra cash on a custom receiver.

 

• Volquartsen Extended Bolt Handle – Volquartsen knows what it is doing when it comes to rimfire guns and this extended bolt handle will make it much easier to clear malfunctions or send the bolt home. It is also slightly more ergonomic due to its round shape rather than the curved blade of a stock charging/bolt handle.

 

• Kidd Bolt Handle Charging Assembly – A great affordable kit that provides you with 3 different options and three different parts plus an additional slicked guide rod – By far the most comprehensive option here as it gives you both a guide rod upgrade, spring options, and aesthetic options.

3. Magazines

Most stock Ruger 10/22 rifles or carbines come with a single 10-round rotary magazine or sometimes a 15-round magazine. The Ruger line of BX series magazines has been one of the greatest improvements to the lineup since the rifle’s release and I think it is probably one of the most commonly purchased accessories for the gun. In my opinion, magazines should be treated like consumables (albeit at a much slower rate). Here are a few magazines I’d suggest for those purchasing their first 10/22.

• Ruger BX-15 Magazine –  The BX-15 combines the best of increased capacity and economy of size. The BX-15 has always been reliable and I particularly like it for use with a bipod as it is short enough to be easily reloaded from a prone position more easily compared to the longer BX-25.

 

• TANDEMKROSS TripleKross Magazine Kit – This is a spin on the classic 10-round rotary magazine. I see these used a lot at competitions where ammunition capacity is restricted for certain divisions but I also think the TripleKross is a great way to skirt around pesky magazine restrictions in states like California.  The kit is a little pricey for 3-10 round magazines but it also comes with a belt attachment to hold the magazine assembly.

 

• Butler Creek Steel Lips Magazine – These are a great alternative to the BX-25 magazines if you’re not willing to pay the extra $10 or so for brand name magazines. I would 100% steer clear of the similar but far inferior Butler Creek “Hot Lips” magazines as the plastic feed lips aren’t as reliable and also wear away very fast.

Honorable Mentions

I didn’t include things like optics, or muzzle accessories, or triggers on this list as I feel like these are either not necessary or they are more or less completely preferential or situational in nature. However, I would like to make a brief mention of extended magazine releases and last round bolt hold-open devices for the 10/22. The 10/22 naturally has a very short magazine release (although this is improved from earlier versions of the 10/22), so extended magazine releases are very popular. The last round bolt hold open is another popular modification and this one can be a great addition for those that want the feature.
