If you’re new to the silencer world, my first suggestion is to suppress whatever host you shoot and enjoy the most. Otherwise, my next suggestion is always to first pickup a great rimfire suppressor, followed by a rifle suppressor and then consider a pistol can. But that order of importance is based on practicality and utility and not pure enjoyment. Seeing as how most pistol and pistol caliber carbines can shoot subsonic rounds, these hosts have the potential to be very quiet – with the right suppressor.

Pistol Suppressors – Six Points To Consider

Compared to other suppressor host combinations, there are some additional factors to consider when picking a pistol silencer.

1. Length/Weight: On handguns, suppressors can nearly double the length and weight of running a host unsuppressed. My suggestion is to pick one that falls on the svelte side of the scale.
2. Mounting Options: While not as important as on a .45 caliber suppressor, a good pistol silencer will give you the ability to run it on a variety of different barrel threads. The ability to add a three lug mount is also important.
3. First Round Pop: Subsonic rounds/cans are susceptible to first round pop – the mixture of air and unburned powder that results in additional noise. Quality manufacturers engineer solutions to minimize this effect.
4. Disassembly/Cleaning: Pistol cans get dirty and, if they aren’t designed well, leave baffles lodged in the tube. Properly designed pistol suppressor baffles shield debris and residue from the outer tube, making cleaning easier.
5. Pricing: I don’t want to spend $1,000+ on a pistol suppressor.
6. Performance: Last, but certainly not least, is sound performance. On the right host with the right ammunition, a good pistol suppressor shouldn’t require any additional hearing protection. The report of a properly suppressed pistol should be quieter than the bullet hitting the backstop.

The stainless steel baffle is built to withstand heavy punishment as well as minimize first round pop. That extra mini baffle disrupts the fuel-air ignition and keeps FRP at bay.

For today’s review I used 180gr Seismic Ammo which had proven itself to be some of the best suppressor ammunition on the market. If you can find some, grab it. It seems to have a bit more kick than standard ammo but it gets close to subsonic 300BLK weights and velocities.

The MOD9 is impressively quiet on pistols. I don’t have any way to verify the CGS 114 dB number reported by CGS, but I wouldn’t doubt it either. This is a quiet can. On the H&K SP5K-PDW pistol caliber carbines and with the fixed barrel spacer installed, the MOD9 holds its own with some of the best dedicated subgun cans.

The MOD9SK performs as expected – louder than a full-sized setup but much shorter and lighter. On a small handgun like the GLOCK 43X, THE CGS MOD9SK pairs nicely like a merlot with a ribeye steak. Or in my case, Trader Joe’s two buck chuck and a cheeseburger.

My only small request would be to notch the baffles for repeatable alignment, even though CGS built in a piston rotation process that adjusts for point of impact differences after cleaning and reassembly. Otherwise, at this price, the CGS MOD9 lands solidly in the ‘buy now’ column.
