Dark Storm Industries (DSI) has introduced a new family of rifles called DS-25 Typhoon that has been in development for six years. Although these rifles are chambered in .308 Winchester, they are not quite AR-10 pattern guns but rather a hybrid of the AR-10 and AR-15 utilizing as many AR-15 parts as possible to decrease the overall weight. The result is a .308 rifle that weighs 6 lbs 11 oz in the configuration with a 16″ barrel.

DS-25 Typhoon rifles feature machined 7075 billet aluminum hard coat anodized upper and lower receivers and 4150 nitrided barrels. They come equipped with DSI Chinook ambidextrous charging handles, billet ambi 90-degree safety selectors, DSI Typhoon free-floated M-LOK handguards and Hogue pistol grips. The gas system is mid-length and the barrels are fitted with DSI Micro gas blocks.

Dark Storm DS-25 Typhoon Standard

Dark Storm Industries DS-25 Typhoon family of rifles currently includes the following four models:

• DS-25 Typhoon Standard. The standard version of the rifle features a 16″ threaded barrel with DSI Firestorm compensator installed, Hogue adjustable stock, 13″ handguard and comes with a 20-round Magpul PMAG.
• DS-25 Typhoon Fixed Mag. This model is identical to the Standard rifle with the exception of the fixed 10-round magazine which makes it legal in states like New York and California.
• DS-25 Typhoon Post Ban. This version is designed for New Jersey residents. It has a fixed Magpul stock, non-threaded barrel and comes with a detachable 10-round PMAG.
• DS-25 Typhoon Non-NFA. This model does not fall under the “assault weapon” definition in CT and NJ. The lack of stock (comes with an SB Tactical SBA3 brace), a barrel length of 12.5″, forward vertical grip and overall length greater than 26″ are the features which combination makes this gun legally not a rifle, pistol or AOW. It is however still not legal in MA, NY, CA, and MD. This firearm comes with a 10″ handguard.

Dark Storm DS-25 Typhoon Non-NFA

All four models of the DS-25 Typhoon rifle have an MSRP of $1,495. The estimated start of shipping is late summer, 2021. In their press release, the company notes that they will later also offer builder’s kits consisting of DS-25 upper and lower receivers, barrels, BCGs and buffer tubes. These kits will allow building your own DS-25 rifle using standard AR-15 components such as handguards, stocks, lower receiver parts and buffers.
