LMT Defense is bringing a civilian copy of the Estonian contract rifles to the US market for civilian purchase as the Estonian Reference Rifle.

TFB first reported LMT’s selection by the Estonian military back in December 2018, the contract award was confirmed by LMT in May 2019 and the contract was officially signed in August 2019. The initial contract covers 16,000 rifles in a mix of 5.56×45 and 7.62×51 rifles. The 5.56x45mm rifles have been ordered in two barrel lengths: a 12-inch barrel for use by Estonia’s special forces units and a standard 14.3-inch length barrel for use by both the Estonian military, police and border officers.

All of the rifles have LMT’s monolithic uppers, new 2-stage triggers (which can be returned to safe with the hammer down), a 2-position gas system and LMT’s own backup iron sights. The Estonian military has requested a particular setup for the rifles including optics and suppressors. The 5.56 rifles are shipping with a Holosun 503 red dot sight and their HMX3 3x magnifier. The 7.62 DMR rifles will ship with a Vortex Razor 1-6 on a Vortex mount.

a.) .260 Rem blows either of these 2 caliber options into next week at 1000 yards, and you can re-load .260 Remington into trimmed & necked-down .308 Win/7.62 NATO brass. Suh - weet
b.) Analogous to the "new" SIG P210 pistol, which simply is not as "proven" a design as the original military P210, there's issue inherent in these sorts of "copies" and that resides in the parts interchangeability. The "original" U.S. Rifle M1 (Garand) had a drop-forged receiver whereas the modern commercial "copy" of the M1 Garand got an investment-cast receiver that is not as strong as the original.

@jonathanpulliam The current ammo stockpile was partly/mostly manufactured before Covid. Capital as in machinery is also already there. Such seemingly insignificant things such as ammo crate dimensions, QC procedures, etc. all have to be redeveloped for any new calibers. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. Not like Covid erased all human knowledge and it certainly affected military supply chains less than civilian ones, national security and long-term supply contracts and all. We've been over this a bunch of times already. As someone already said, the juice is not worth the squeeze i.e. ammo benefits are not worth the headache. IMO the upcoming NGSW caliber is mostly a career and a retirement nest egg enhancement program.
