SILENCER SATURDAY #160: Innovative Arms DECEPTION 7.62

Good morning can fans and welcome back to the 160th edition of TFB’s Silencer Saturday brought to you by Yankee Hill Machine, manufacturers of the new light and modular Nitro N20 suppressor. Last week we brought you a quick look at the Spikes Tactical Compressor suppressed upper receiver in 5.56x45mm. This week we dig into the Innovative Arms Deception 7.62 rifle silencer. The Deception is built like a tank, but how does it sound? Let’s take a look.

Innovative Arms is a solid company that makes affordable, quality suppressors. It’s a shame that SHOT Show 2021 was canceled; this is the one time a year that I get to meet face to face with the suppressor industry and the Innovative Arms booth is always a fun stop.

The DECEPTION® gives outstanding sound suppression with extreme durability and accuracy. It aggressively does its job and can endure substantial use. Its undeniable toughness, versatility and the ability to withstand adversity make the Deception an essential tool to the serious rifleman. The patented one piece core is machined from billet bar stock and has no internal welds. The DECEPTION is direct-thread on in 5/8 x 24 and is full auto rated on barrels down to 10″ (5.5″ with .300blk). Wrench flats are incorporated to allow easy pin and weld for shorter barrels. The DECEPTION is rated for multiple calibers, and almost every rifle application, including  7.62, 308, .300blk, .243, .260, 6mm, 6.5, 5.56 and .223 on down. Click the tabs below for more information, including pricing, customer reviews and how to order.

The DECEPTION is available in several colors, and with or without our patented Exoskeleton™ Shroud.

The Exoskeleton™ Shroud gives many advantages, it also works as a heat sink and gives added grip when mounting the suppressor to the rifle.  *The Exoskeleton™ Shroud is required for use with 300WM.

As with all our silencers, the DECEPTION can be fired “wet” or “dry”.  Do not use a crush washer in conjunction with any Innovative Arms silencer.

At 20 ounces, the DECEPTION 7.62 is on the high end of the weight scale. However it is full auto rated and does not list any minimum barrel length restrictions. As we say in the silencer industry, there is no free lunch – a hard use suppressor will require heavier materials capable of withstanding extreme heat and pressures.

The DECEPTION is a direct thread suppressor that uses 5/8 x 24 threading to mount to your host gun. A 1/2 x 28 insert (and a host of others) is available if you want to run it on smaller caliber hosts. Those looking for a quick disconnect option should consider the INTERCEPTOR 7.62 QA that uses a flash hider or muzzle brake with rachetting teeth for easy swaps between hosts.

Innovative Arms also offers the DECEPTION X as a shorter alternative for 300BLK hosts. It’s also rated for  larger rounds as a K-style suppressor. The Exoskeleton option is a unique outer cage surrounding the blast chamber of some of Innovative Arms suppressors that adds additional reinforcement for heavy use and high pressure rounds like .300WM.

Before pulling a trigger I had preconceived ideas that the DECEPTION would be best served on a supersonic host/caliber. But mounting it up on a 300BLK bolt action rifle and loading up some quality subsonic rounds from SIG Sauer changed my mind fairly quickly. While not the quietest 300BLK suppressor I have tested (to my ear), it definitely ranks towards the top. My only reluctance for this application would be the 20 ounce weight penalty. A dedicated subsonic 300BLK silencer should run somewhere around 12 ounces.

On the SIG Sauer 716i AR-10 with a 16” barrel, the added durability that is needed to withstand full power .308 rounds comes at the cost of extra weight. The results were as pleasant as can be expected – this round, no matter the platform or the suppressor, will never be traditionally quiet. The DECEPTION does a nice job of knocking the blast down to understandable levels. I also did not notice any excessive blowback or “gas to the face” that can happen on semiautomatic rifles with suppressors designed for noise reduction at the muzzle and not at the ear.

With an estimated street price somewhere around $600, the Innovative Arms DECEPTION 7.62 can handle anything you can throw at it. Invest in the optional Exoskeleton model if you plan on using really short barrels, large cartridges or excessive full auto strings of fire. This is a well made, all round .308 suppressor that won’t kill your wallet and will offer you everything you need and nothing you don’t. If you are looking for something to trek around the woods or to go on a nimble carbine, you may want to check out other options.

Thanks for reading. Be safe, have fun and we’ll see you here next weekend for another Silencer Saturday.
