[TFB GUNFEST] Here Come The Drums! Magpul MP5 Drum & Glock 17 Drum Magazines

It is Magpul week and Magpul is releasing new products every day this week. Today they are releasing two new 9mm drum magazines. The Magpul MP5 drum and Magpul Glock 17 drum.

Just last month Magpul released their CZ Scorpion PMAG D-50 EV9. Their PMAG D-50 GL9 has yet to be released. That is their AR-9 PCC Glock pattern drum mag. Well, now they are coming out with a full sized Glock 17 drum magazine. All the D-50 9mm drum magazines share the same components. All Magpul had to do is change the towers.

There are some things to take into consideration with the Magpul Glock 17 drum magazine. The mag catch in your Glock may need to be replaced or upgraded. Jon Canipe of Magpul told us it is a simple fact that you are trying to hang 50 rds off a plastic mag catch and the weight of the drum does not help either. So if you have a Gen 3 Glock 17 with a high round count then you should get a new replacement mag catch. If you have a Gen 4/5 Glock 17 you should upgrade to a metal mag catch.

The Glock 17 that Jon brought with him has the Magpul enhanced magazine well. According to Jon, the new Glock 17 drum should fit most mag wells. I am not sure about race gun mag wells as they are very deep but we shall see when it gets released.

The Glock 17 drum will retail for $119.95 and be released in the early spring.

Last week, Magpul teased the internet with this photo. Speculation was high. We already have a handguard and grip module from Magpul for the MP5. What else could it be? Some kind of MP5 magazine? That is the only thing that makes sense. This was definitely the most exciting item Jon of Magpul brought out at GunFest 2021. The Magpul MP5 Drum.

Just like the Glock 17 drum, the Magpul MP5 drum shares the same parts. The only change is the mag tower to fit the MP5.

The Magpul MP5 drum mag is sort of a miniature D-60 5.56 drum mag. Normal MP5 magazines are double stack, double feed just like an AR-15 magazine. So the D-50 MP mag is a single stack. You can see the flapping door on the side of the mag tower, similar to the D-60 drum mag. The length of the Magpul MP5 drum mag is the same as a factory 15 rd MP5 stick magazine

Herein lies the problem. Making a Magpul MP5 drum is relatively easy. Their drum magazine design is simply a snail drum with a single column feeding up into the gun. MP5 magazines are double stack and double feed. While the CZ Scorpion is similar, it was designed with a polymer magazine from the ground up. MP5 magazines are steel and very thin. There is very little room for polymer and double-stack 9mm. Jon Canipe says at this moment they are not making an MP5 stick magazine until they can make one that is 100% reliable and satisfactory to their standards. So far all the other polymer MP5 magazines out in the market have been lackluster. Hopefully, Magpul can solve this complex puzzle, but in the meantime, you can get their MP5 drum magazine in the second quarter of 2021. It will retail for $119.95 just like their other 9mm drum mags.
