TFB Review: Tyrant Designs Concept One and MOD v2 Grip Upgrades

REVIEW: Tyrant Designs Concept One and MOD v2 Grip Upgrades

Since buying entire guns has gone out of style for the time being most of us have had to find new ways to keep ourselves occupied in our favorite hobby. I’ve been recently taking a bit of time to try new accessories and upgrades on a few of my AR-15 pistols as well as some of my pistol caliber carbines that I use for competitions and Tyrant Designs has been a huge help in this endeavor. Tyrant Designs was kind enough to send me out their new Concept One pistol grip and MOD v2 ForeGrip for testing and review and today I’ll be sharing my results on how these grip upgrades worked out on two of my rigs.

The Concept One Ar-15 Pistol Grip

More or less my current AR pistol is using off-the-shelf components. Meanwhile, I have done almost nothing to my Ruger PC Carbine aside from the addition of a Trijicon MRO sight and a 3D printed hand stop (we’ll talk about the MOD V2 ForeGrip replacement later). I tried out both the MOD v2 ForeGrip and Concept One grip on each of these platforms to assess their performance and the results surprised me quite a bit.

The Concept One grip sits at a slightly reduced angle than a standard AR-15 pistol grip and for me gives my trigger finger a more direct and firm pull straight back into my palm. This also has the added benefit of making it slightly easier to shoot from a prone or supported position. The Concept One grip also has a single finger groove which fits quite nicely although I think those with smaller fingers might have had a different experience than I did with it.

I found the Concept One worked particularly well on my Ruger PC Carbine which is my go-to pistol caliber carbine for competitions. The reduced angle of the Concept One translates perfectly into a modern shooting stance and the robust nature of the aluminum construction gave me absolute authority over my hand position when transitioning between targets.

Installation on the Concept One pistol grip is very easy since it is a straight-up drop-in replacement for a standard AR-15 grip. The fit and finish on the Concept One are what I have come to expect from Tyrant Designs – the machining and anodizing are top-tier. The Concept One also features rubberized front and back straps which provide a comfortable yet firm grip and are not overly soft. I found the Concept One to not only be snappy looking but very functional as well. Overall, I think it makes for a great lightweight drop-in replacement for any standard AR-15 grip if you’re looking to add a little bit of aesthetic flair to your AR-15. The one I picked out came in Gold but Tyrant Design also sells the Concept One in Red, Blue, Grey, Black.

    The MOD V2 ForeGrip

The MOD V2 Foregrip shares many of the same characteristics as the Concept One pistol grip. They are both pleasing to look at, feature strong aluminum construction, great anodizing as well as firm and comfortable rubberized contact surfaces which provide great control. The MOD v2 ForeGrip comes in the same colors as the Concept One and will easily attach to any M-LOK or KeyMod rail.

REVIEW: Tyrant Designs Concept One and MOD v2 Grip Upgrades

On my AR pistol, I found the MOD v2 ForeGrip to be slightly less useful than with the PC Carbine and I think this is mostly due to the overall length of the rifle itself. I personally feel like the longer barrel and forend of the PC Carbine set my hand at just the right angle to get the most of this grip. The neat part about having it on the PC Carbine is that the little arrow-shaped notch at the front of the MOD v2 grip gave me the perfect spot to place a single finger in between the handguard and the grip which felt like it gave me a bit more muzzle authority than before with just the hand stop.

REVIEW: Tyrant Designs Concept One and MOD v2 Grip Upgrades

Overall, I feel like these components worked well enough on a standard AR-15 but I found surprisingly that they worked beyond my expectations on my Ruger PC Carbine! On top of performance, it also helps that they add a bit of flair to the rifle which in the competition world is sometimes part of the fun of building the rig.

    Conclusions

Both the Concept One pistol grip and MOD v2 ForeGrip are great accessories right out of the box. If I had more of a budget during this time of year, I think I could actually stand to go in for a few extra accessories to fully build out my PC Carbine. I quite like how both the foregrip and pistol grip looked on the PC carbine and I feel that the addition of a better stock would round out the build just a bit more.
