TFB’s Build Of The Week Series: Set 1 Results

The US Presidential Election may still be up in the air, but the results for Build of the Week’s Set 1 are in! (too soon?)

The Build of the Week Winner Is…

With 36% of the vote, the winner is…….Clay P’s “The Hulk”. Congrats! For winning, “The Hulk” will receive a $100 gift card to Brownells to assist with future builds.

    Runners Up

2nd was Doug M’s “Corona Light 10/22” (with 26% of the vote)

3rd was basically a tie between Charlie G’s “Wannabe Space Invader” and Wolfgar’s “Now you see it, now you don’t”, separated by a mere vote.

Unfortunately, these builds did not win a prize this time. However, we are going to make a slight change to the rules. Runners up will be allowed to submit one new build if they wish (originally we were only going to allow one submission per person per six set cycles).

    Random Voter

As a reward for participating, we also picked a random person from the pool of votes. David M. from Madrid is the winner and will receive a $25 gift card.

    Voter Comments

    Clay P’s: “The Hulk”

I like the entire set up especially the large caliber. I have a things for bolt actions.”

    -Patrick H

    I’m sure you do, Patrick…

Nepotism. Plus I think his is best.”

    – Diane P

Nepotism is a solid reason to cast a vote.

Great colors, compact package, and HULK SMASH!!!!”

    – R L

Yes, I think this gun does, in fact, smash Hulks.

Haha, I helped him build it”

    – Ted F

Sounds like there is a story there…?

gun go boom have beeg bullet”

    – John W

    Beats a club there, doesn’t it, Bam-bam?

    Doug M’s: “Corona Light 10/22”

The Build is entirely purpose driven. Considering a firearms purpose is first and foremost that of a tool, then like all the best tools, its design should reflect its purpose clearly. Everything it needs to be, and nothing it doesn’t.”

    – Forrest K

Agreed. Though I think it needs to be in my collection…

It is something different than the typical build. It is also something that is somewhat focused on bringing new people into the shooting fold.”

    -John B

Yassss! Bringing more people in to shooting should be a goal of us all.

    Charlie G’s: “Wannabe Space Invader”

It’s got a can, I don’t like the kryptek camo. bolt guns aren’t that exciting, and .22’s are kinda meh.”

    – Matthew P

Pete? Is that you? Are you using a sock puppet account to vote?!?

Looks the most like the next weapon I want to build. Awesome to see how piecing a build together can emulate much more expensive factory firearms.”

    – Taylor S

Buh, buh, it doesn’t have the manufacture name and price tag. How you can appropriately fanboi?

    Pimping”

    – Gregorio Q

It is missing the requisite felt and feathers.

Wolfgar’s: “Now you see it, now you don’t”

Because it is mine and the coolest..”

    – Wolfgar

You had better love your own…

The use of high quality parts and also will be very practical in SHTF, especially in the wilderness area. It also looks nice”

    – Christopher L

It always comes down to the looks, doesn’t it…

    Because its sick bro!”

    – CG

    No regrets.

With hunting season in full effect im looking at making a build very similar and it gave me some good ideas on what i can do for my own . Thanks for the help”

    – Jacob M

Copycat-ing is the highest form of flattery.

How “Build of the Week” works.

We will feature a build each week (assuming we get enough submissions). After four builds, we will hold a public vote. The winning build of that vote will win a prize. A random voter will also receive a prize. We will repeat that same cycle six times after which we will hold a run-off and the winning build will get a much more awesome prize (remember the rifle from last time?). Second place will also win a prize. We will also pick a couple of random voters that will get prize packs.

    The best submissions will include:

    • A unique build you have done and the concept for it.
    • A great overall photo of the build—James did an excellent primer on photographing guns.
    • Component prices and weights.
    • Individual item photos.
    • Detail of why a component was chosen.
    • Link to where that component was sourced (if commercially available).
    • Staying involved with the post by answering questions the other readers have.

    A few caveats:

    • Do NOT just copy someone else’s build, change a couple of things and call it good.
    • Do NOT submit a build with a single line item which is the completed gun—we want to the see the custom parts that make it up.
    • Concept builds were pretty universally hated by the readers—we may still allow a couple depending upon circumstances but don’t be offended if you get torn apart in the comments.
    • We will only accept one winning build per person, per six cycles. Make it your best.
    • It does not just have to be a gun, though a gun MUST be the central focus.

    How to submit a build

Go to https://theprepared.com/kits. You will see some other example kits that are more related to preparedness. Scroll down a little and you will see a banner with a link to “Create Your Own Kit”. If you don’t have an account (or are not logged in), clicking on that link will popup a box allowing you to do either. Once you are logged in, the “Create Kit” wizard process will start. Give the kit a catchy name and set the visibility to “Public”. Follow the steps and make your build. Everything is saved in realtime, and you can always get back to it on the main “kits” page.

Email the link to your kit (either copy from the URL or hit the “share” button on the editor) to tom.r @ thefirearmblog.com with the subject of “Build of the Week Submission”. I’ll check out the build and if it is good to go, it will be added to the queue. If it needs some work, I’ll help you polish it up.

May the odds ever be in your favor.
