Happy Halloween everyone and welcome to the latest edition of TFB’s Silencer Saturday brought to you by the wizards at Yankee Hill Machine, manufacturers of the impressive R9 multi-caliber suppressor. Last week we dug into the 9mm Bul Armory double stack 1911 as a suppressor host. This week I thought it would be fitting to get freaky with our suppressor host combinations. A full moon on October 31st means that people are bound to do some crazy stuff – let’s take a look at some unique setups.

SILENCER SATURDAY #149: Five Spooky Suppressor Host Combinations

If you are anything like me, you’ve often looked in your safe and wondered “what would that gun sound like if I used that suppressor.” As an American man of somewhat advanced years, I have inadvertently done some idiotic and dangerous things that probably should have left me blind, removed an extremity, or put me six feet under. I’d like to think that there is a higher power out there watching over me to make sure we get to 2000 editions of Silencer Saturday before I’m eventually called home for good.

But, in the name of science (entertainment, really) and in celebration of All Hallows Eve (the potential for death and dismemberment) let’s take a look at some unique suppressor host combinations that make liability lawyers scream. Please do not follow along at home.

GLOCK G29 10mm with the SilencerCo Octane 45HD

• GLOCK G29 – MSRP $599
• SilencerCo Octane 45HD – MSRP $624

This is not the most unique setup on today’s list but the 10mm cartridge does not get suppressed as often as its lesser millimeter cousin. Since I don’t have a piston threaded in the 9/16 X 24 thread pitch common for .40 caliber and 10mm threaded barrels, I used a thread adapter to go to a 5/8 X 24 direct thread mount. Care must be taken when suppressing a 10mm host – barrel lengths can be short and pressures can be high from some of the hard-hitting boutique ammunition manufacturers. (Note, I did not shoot the 200gr hard cast Underwood Ammo pictured, I used some tame range Ammo from SIG).

This combination suppressed surprisingly well, considering the prowess of the “best millimeter” round.

• Did it cycle: No (direct thread mount)
• How did it sound? Good/fair

Beretta M9A3 9mm with the direct thread YHM R9

• Beretta M9A3 – MSRP $1100
• YHM R9 – MSRP $449

As we wait for the YHM R9 pistons and three lug mount to become available, I thought we’d use a pistol host that can run with a direct thread mount. So, what’s so spooky about this setup? It’s scarily quiet. On the flip side, it’s a pretty heavy combination. This is one of those time I wish I was able to more easily provide you with  audio/video reviews.

• Did it cycle: Yes
• How did it sound? Very good.

GLOCK 44 .22LR with the SureFire SOCOM556 R2

• GLOCK 44 – MSRP $450
• SureFire SOCOM556 R2 – MSRP $1,099

I know every one of you have either tried using a rifle suppressor on a rimfire gun or have at least thought about it. This setup looks cool, but only rates a ‘good’ on the sound scale. This is most likely because the SureFire can is optimized for supersonic .223, not subsonic .22LR.

• Did it cycle: No
• How did it sound? Good.

Remington 870 TAC-14 12ga with the SilencerCo Salvo12

• Remington 870 TAC-14 – MSRP $449
• SilencerCo Salvo12 – MSRP $999

This configuration makes the list due to its frightening long length and badass looks. Unfortunately, to successfully suppress a 12 gauge, a longer barrel is a must. The Salvo in long configuration knocks the blast down, but isn’t near what anyone would consider “quiet”.

• Did it cycle: Do you even lift?
• How did it sound? Fair

Ruger MKIII .22LR with the Delta P Designs Brevis II Ultra 6.5

• Ruger MKIV – MSRP  $569
• Delta P Designs Brevis II Ultra – MSRP $1659

I’ve teased this alien blaster before and is does sound great. However, the scariest part of this package is really the price. If anyone tells you that a $1600 rimfire suppressor is reasonable, run, don’t walk to your friendly neighborhood SOT. The Delta P Brevis is made for precision rifles chambered in 6.5CM, not backyard plinkers.

• Did it cycle: Yes.
• How did it sound? Very good.

BONUS: H&K SP5K-PDW 9mm with the Dead Air Odessa in its shortest configuration

• H&K SP5K-PDW – MSRP $2799
• Dead Air Odessa – MSRP $899

This ultra-shorty is compact and fairly light for holding 30 rounds of 9mm. The problem is, in its shortest length, the Odessa 9 is just a blast baffle with an end cap. The results were expectedly loud, even for a roller delayed host. But it does have a movie gun look that makes all the kids want to become action heroes.

• Did it cycle: Yes.
• How did it sound? Almost like it wasn’t suppressed.
