One of my favorite things in this world is trap shooting. When I had requested to review a trap thrower out of Champion Target’s thrower line up, I was not sure if anything would come of it. Happy and excited to tell you that I had a great opportunity to get to know one of those throwers in their line up. The EasyBird Auto-Feed Doubles Trap thrower is the one in question today. I look forward to talking about how this mechanical chunk of fun works and how fun it was to use. Let us dive right into the EasyBird Auto-Feed Doubles Trap!

SPECIFICATIONS: Easybird Auto-Feed Doubles Trap

Champion Target has a long lineage of useful and unique target systems and shooting accessories. In the line up of trap throwers, this one fills a specific role that I do not think many people think is necessary; the ability to throw two clay pigeons at once and at a fairly rapid succession if need be. I did not think this was an addition or difference that I ever needed to play with but I was totally wrong. I think this trap thrower has a tad bit more potential to help practice than others. Let us jump into the specs of a thrower that keeps you at the ready!

The EasyBird Auto-Feed Doubles Trap comes well organized in a large cardboard box and the main thrower body is bolted to a square chunk of plywood at the base of the box. It comes with a printed manual and DVD which I plan to further touch on later. All parts are boxed except for the three arm path indicator tubes and the 50-foot foot pedal and cord that comes attached to the main body of the thrower. When everything is in the box, it is very heavy but once assembled it really is not awful or had to move.

Assembly: Easybird Auto-Feed Doubles Trap

The manual that the trap thrower comes with gives a well-detailed blueprint to assembly out of the box. Putting this machine together took me about two hours total. My biggest gripe with this setup is that although the manual is very thorough it feels like it was written by two people and one of them was not trying to make sure things came through clear. It can be super vague at parts I would deem important such as setting up the mainspring correctly. This could be attributed to some sort of preemptive purposeful verbiage in the event of someone hurting themselves and taking legal action. I even went as far as watching the assembly portion included in the DVD and it was one hundred times vaguer than the manual was. I realize almost no one ever watches an included DVD unless they need something out of it but why make a DVD at all if it has little to no substance, especially if a buyer is more of a visual learner.

Operation: EASYBIRD AUTO-FEED DOUBLES TRAP

Operating the trap thrower is not hard at all. If set up correctly with the power unconnected and the arm in an “uncocked” position, 100 clay pigeons can be loaded into the magazine shutes, 50 on each side. When powered up, the arm automatically loads two pigeons that are now ready to fly. The pedal and cord are easy to manipulate and I would recommend using your forward or non-dominant foot to actuate it so that you are not off balance when the clays are released. The only unnerving part about this throwers operation is “uncocking” it or removing spring tension from the arm. With the power still connected you are able to press the “Safe Release” switch to release the arm and have it stop in the uncocked position. Sometimes the arm did not settle in the uncocked position and this could be attributed to how tight or loose the mainspring was set up. Be wary of it and learn what the uncocked position should look like and you will be safe.

Range Time: EASYBIRD AUTO-FEED DOUBLES TRAP

As I mentioned in the previous paragraph, although this trap thrower is not idiot-proof, it is very easy and enjoyable to use. The angle and distance that targets get thrown are very reliable and competitive. The one second cycle time was extremely fun to try to shoot the targets as fast as they were thrown. I was using a Retay Masai Mara semi-auto shotgun that I have for review over at our sister company AllOutdoor.com. Even with a semi-auto shotgun, it was difficult to jump back and forth as the targets were thrown in rapid succession and I have been shooting trap all my life. This trap thrower displaces a special place of practice that I have not met before and it was welcomed. I introduced this thrower to friends and family and asked their opinions and all were very positive!

Transporting and storage: EASYBIRD AUTO-FEED DOUBLES TRAP

The EasyBird Auto-Feed Doubles Trap is fairly easy to transport and store. In terms of striping it down to its key components for saving on space, the magazine shutes lift off with ease, the arm path indicator tubes pop off simply, and the overall size of the thrower and legs is enough to fit in the trunk of most cars. Weight-wise it is on the heavier side and I would recommend that at least two people carry it.

Champion Target has plenty of useful add ons and attachments that are compatible with this trap thrower. I myself did not have any available for testing and I am sure someday they each could have a review of their own. The accessories compatible with this thrower include:

All in all, I think this trap thrower is a welcomed sight in the world of clay pigeons and trap enthusiasts. It is a unique system that I myself was not super impressed with just by reading about it. I underestimated this item greatly. It was an absolute blast and pleasure to work with and I would recommend this over many other trap systems specifically if someone is looking to practice up on their shotgunning. This is a quality product and I think it is worth its price tag since it’s durable, easy to use, easy to store, and just works until your battery runs out!
