Happy mid-pumpkin spice season everyone and welcome back to another edition of TFB’s Silencer Saturday brought to you by Yankee Hill Machine, manufacturers of the awesome (and affordable) YHM R9 suppressor. Speaking of which, we ran the R9 last weekend on the 300BLK Q Honey Badger using the Plan B and Cherry Bomb mounting system. That’s a fun little package. Due to an excess amount of work and a dwindling supply of subsonic ammunition, I don’t have a focused review prepared for today. Instead I thought we’d take a look at the recently approved HK SP5K PDW Form 1 SBR with the Dead Air Wolfman and three lug adapter. We’ll also take a look at some news and announcements from around the industry.

The Dead Air Wolfman is an excellent suppressor that is both wipe-capable and modular allowing the user to configure their suppressor for the host of the day (host du jour). It’s on the pricier side as 9mm silencers go, however you do get what you pay for – a quality setup that is basically two cans in one.

A suppressed roller-delayed PDW is about as much fun as you can have with your clothes on. If I wasn’t camera shy I’d get picture of myself shooting the SP5K PDW in the buff. Actually, no one wants to see that, let’s stick to silencers.

The Dead Air three lug attachment for the Wolfman has been out of stock for a few months, so when I got the in-stock alert from our friends at Hansohn Brothers, my wallet was out faster than James’s thighs on a warm spring day. I’m looking forward to the YHM three lug device for the R9 finally making its debut in a week or two. I owe you all a video/audio comparison of the R9, Omega 9K and the Wolfman in short configuration from the initial review a few weeks back.

Over the years we’ve discussed a variety of ways to evaluate and review suppressors. Ron Allen from Allen Engineering was nice enough to loan me a B&K 2209 decibel meter for almost a year. We’ve done some video analysis. And we’ve also done the whole ‘trust me, I’ve shot a few of these before, it sounds like this’ type of reviews. Let’s face it, nothing is as good as hearing a suppressor first hand. And expensive systems like the B&K Impulse in use by Thunder Beast Arms Corporation and Suppressed Nation are always going to be out of my price range. Jay at PEW Science has got a great program going as well.

But I have come up with a three microphone recording setup that might be slightly more useable for suppressor reviews over the internet. I’m still tweaking it, but when comparing different silencers, I can hear the difference. It won’t do much good for standalone reviews, but you may find it useful when we compare a reference silencer to a new model.

AAC Suppressors – Now What?

With the bankruptcy, sale and breakup of the Remington empire, AAC has landed in the hands of the parent company of PSA. Well, the AAC name and trademarks now belong to PSA anyway. I’d say we are a ways off from getting an idea of what the future holds for the AAC brand. But one unlucky member at AR15.com is living through a some pain related to the Remington bankruptcy, sending in his 762-SD for warranty work and is now unable to get ahold of anyone at the old AAC facility or a return of his property. If anyone has advice or guidance for getting his silencer back, let me know and I’ll pass it along.
