S.W.O.R.D. Defense, located in Sparks, Nevada, USA, is “a veteran owned and staffed warfighter solution focused company”. They have just released a new piston upper receiver called PURG-E, especially developed for M855A1 ammunition.
The upper receiver is flat top with a full length Picatinny rail, as well as M4-pattern feed ramps and is CNC machined from 7075 T6 Aluminum which has been hard coat anodized. The company says that the PURG-E should be considered as an upgrade to the M4 Carbine. It is compatible with current issued M4 Mil-Spec lowers, both with semi-only or select-fire systems.
The operation is short stroke gas piston and push rod system. The bolt is ultra lightweight, but despite the weight savings the company claims that is has incredible durability and that the unlocking and recoil impulses have been greatly reduced.

The PURG-E, which is designed to address problems identified by warfighters with current weapon systems and the M855A1 round. Created in response to direct feedback from those who have worked in the field, the PURG-E reduces fouling, gas blow-back, identified after adopting new M855A1 ammunition. The PURG-E is an upgrade to the M-4 Carbine, redesigned yet compatible with current issued M-4 Mil-Spec lowers having semi-only or select-fire systems.
Enhanced Features
PURG-E features are centered on the rotating bolt, which is built with added material and radius where it counts most. Other improvements include:
• A driving band ride surface and lubrication groove to minimize the flex seen with a standard ring style bolt configuration.
