Lyman AR Reloading Handbook – Second Edition (1)

Lyman has announced that the second edition of their AR Reloading Handbook is now available. Compared to the first book, the 2nd edition Lyman AR Reloading Handbook has an expanded cartridge list that includes the latest AR cartridges such as .224 Valkyrie, .22 Nosler, .24 Nosler, and .350 Legend, as well as updated data on other cartridges, bullets and powders. Lyman advertises this new handbook as a comprehensive source of AR reloading information that provides the AR shooter with reloading data for nearly all AR based calibers.

Besides the new and updated ammunition data, the 2nd edition of Lyman AR Reloading Handbook also contains articles on popular topics like “Building an AR”, “Reloading for Suppressors” and “AR15 Gas System Lengths”. This handbook also includes reloading data for cast bullets and subsonic loads for different cartridges. The MSRP of the second edition Lyman AR Reloading Handbook is $17.

What I really like about Lyman handbooks compared to reloading manuals published by ammunition or powder manufacturers is that they are not focused on any specific brand of components and cover a wide range of projectiles and propellants. I have the Lyman 50th edition general reloading handbook and I think it is probably the only reloading book most of the handloaders will ever need unless you reload some exotic cartridge or need in-depth data on components of any particular manufacturer. That being said, the new Lyman AR Reloading Handbook should also be a great data source for people who only or mostly reload AR ammunition.

I had the first edition of this book, and it honestly was not all that great. It had a giant section about shooting 204 Ruger through an AR - who's doing that? - and the reloading for suppressors section rambled way too much with very few specifics. It felt very much like it was targeted for Fudds who had bought their first AR, and not for people who actually were trying to maximize AR performance via handloading.

What I need from an AR book is information about _AR LOADS_. Give me the real-deal 5.56 data with 60k pressure loads, and include the data for common "tactical" bullets such as barrier blind rounds and FMJ. G-d forbid you actually give me some velocities out of an 11.5" SBR, too!
