HOT GAT or FUDD CRAP? K98K Custom PCC or Bubba Catastrophe?

    Hot Gat or Fudd Crap

Welcome everyone to the 60th edition of ‘Hot Gat or Fudd Crap?’, one of our many series here on TFB. If you’re new to the series, this is where we look at the most obscure firearms that are actually for sale and ask the question – is this Gat a sweet deal or only have Fudd appeal?  Each week the TFB staff weighs in with their thoughts, but readers get the final say in the poll at the bottom of each article.

In our last edition, our poll showed that you, the readers, decided the Louis Vuitton Springfield XD was just plain trashy.

At this time the original auction remains up, while it awaits a new adoptive home.

In this week’s edition of HGFC, we look at a K98K rechambered in .45 ACP. As is tradition, this 1911 mag accepting bolt gun is currently up for sale on GunBroker for $619 Buy It Now.

Let’s see what the Staff had to say about this week’s offering:

“This has to be trolling… right? Someone please tell me this is trolling, for the love of God. I just don’t know anymore.” -Will P.

“Because the 9mm largo destroyer carbines don’t make a big enough hole. Need more power!…Something something putting an American thing inside a German thing joke.” -Sam S.

“Ok. You’re halfway there. Come back when you are integrally suppressed” -Giorgio O.

Selling this strangely modified historical gat is GunBroker seller RarePePe, located in Arlington, TX.  Let’s see what they had to say about this strange K98K conversion.

Yep. a k98k that shoots .45acp. It takes 1911 mag. Before you say I bubbed a k98. I built this on a stripped DOU 45 receiver years ago. A Rhineland .45 kit was fitted to the receiver and the barreled action was then put on a sporter k98 stock, barrel is free floating and the gun is very accurate, I can hit 150yd steel all day long with it. The bolt used is a rather rare k98az bolt. the receiver was dilled and tapped, a monstrom pic rail was fitted to the receiver. The red dot on the rail is a Fieldsport red dot. it’s not a gucci sight by any means but It holds zero pretty well. This gun would make a great host for suppressors if you do plan to thread the barrel, would be very quiet if you use subsonic ammo. One 10rd mag and the red dot will be included with the gun Please be advised this is by no means a perfect gun, some work may need to be made to the ejector for more reliable, faster cycling , but it shoots straight and the gun goes bang every time you pull the trigger. PLEASE SEND ME A MESSAGE IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTION BEFORE BUYING. **usps money order or Paypal friend and family only**

The Karabiner 98 Kurtz (or K98k) has been in service since 1935 in its original chambering of 7.92x57mm Mauser.  Rechambering this rifle in an American pistol cartridge seems like classic post-war American fuddery at work (or just plain trolling).

With that said, the seller isn’t wrong in saying this rifle could or would sound good suppressed.  Still, why not just buy a modern PCC instead?

I have yet to meet “that guy” who has an excess of 1911 magazines, but I’m sure he exists.  While the desire to own a rifle that accepts low capacity single stack pistol magazines has certainly never crossed my mind, clearly it’s crossed someone else’s.

While this particular rifle isn’t my cup of tea, I’m strangely intrigued at how well this conversion was done.  If you’d told me about this in person, I would have imagined something that looked much worse.  As always, I’ll let you decide.
