Machine gun shooters and fans will be disappointed to hear that this year’s Big Sandy machine gun shoot has just officially been canceled. With the cited reason being similar to that of the cancellation of the Spring 2020 shoot – COVID-19. Although those who have registered for the March 2020 shoot will miss out yet again on the October shoot, they will be credited for the next shoot which at this time is TBA for some time in 2021.
Big Sandy 2020 Machine Gun Shoot Canceled due to COVID
Big Sandy 2020 was to have taken place at its namesake – Big Sandy Range between October 16th and 18th. This cancellation comes on the heels of another big machine gun shoot being canceled – Knob Creek which would have taken place just a week before.
Big Sandy is not just an event for shooting machine guns, however. The event hosts various matches and competitions with guns like the M1 Garand, M1 Thompson submachine gun as well as Browning Automatic Rifles and Bolt action rifles. Both paid shooters and spectators can participate in these matches and results are posted yearly.
If competing isn’t your style, machine gun rentals are available to spectators (for a premium). Spectators can rent everything from small submachine guns like the Iconic UZI, to the Tried and Tested Browning M2 .50 BMG Heavy Machine Gun.
Another unique event that runs alongside the machine gun rentals is a drone shoot. The Drone shoot pits machinegun shooters against several drones which are piloted by hobbyists who probably get just as much of a kick out of it as the shooters do. Jeff from the TAOFLEDERMAUS YouTube channel had some great footage of this particular event from 2014 and it’s currently one of the things on my bucket list to try.
Hopefully we can get back to some semblance of normalcy soon and great events like Big Sandy can go ahead as usual! If any of you have been to the Big Sandy Machine Gun Shoot please feel free to give us any comments down below about your experience, we’d love to hear about them since we can’t make it there ourselves this year.
