POTD: German Kampfschwimmer (1970)

POTD, short for Photo Of The Day, is TFB’s recurring articles where we go to great length trying to find the best pictures and stories out there. Today we have an excellent photo. Unfortunately, there is no reference whatsoever other than “Close combat demonstration by German Kampfschwimmer“.

The Kommando Spezialkräfte Marine is a German commando amphibious warfare force and the Special Forces of the German Navy. The unit was set up as Germany joined NATO in 1955, and is often called Kampfschwimmer. However, there was also a Commando Force with Frogmen in the former GDR/ Eastern Germany, stationed in Kühlungsborn. Since this Combat Frogman is doing some kind of artistic kick – in a wetsuit – on a soldier carrying a Heckler & Koch G3 and a Western Germany flag, I tend to believe that this photo is either from the old East or some kind of made-up shot to make Western soldiers beware of the enemy?

Note that the frogman is carrying some kind of banana-looking diving knife.

Do you have more information about this picture? What do you think of its history?
