HOT GAT or FUDD CRAP? Space Blaster or 22 Disaster?

Welcome everyone to the 52nd edition of ‘Hot Gat or Fudd Crap?’, one of our many series here on TFB. If you’re new to the series, this is where we look at the most obscure firearms that are actually for sale and ask the question – is this Gat a sweet deal or only have Fudd appeal? Each week the TFB staff weighs in with their thoughts, but readers get the final say in the poll at the bottom of each article.

In our last edition, our poll showed that you the readers, decided the Ruger MKII was pure fudd crap.

Let’s see what the Staff had to say about this week’s offering:

“I didn’t know they made the Star Trek phaser in 22lr” – Benjamin F.

George Jetson did not approve any sale from his collection.” – Giorgio O.

“Is that a pricey vintage .22, or an alien laser gun that the Area 51 raiders jacked from Nevada last year?” – Will P.

“Who wouldn’t want one of these” – Matt M.

“If you chromed it, it could be a prop out of Star Wars.” – Nick C.

Selling this blaster shaped pistol is GunBroker seller techerd, located in Blue Springs, MO.  Let’s see what they had to say about this retro 22LR.

This Whitney Arms Wolverine is a semi-automatic pistol chambered in 22LR. A 4.5″ barrel is adorned with fixed sights. Hard plastic bakelite grips are textured to give users a secure grasp at all times. Wolverines have a space-age design, definitely recalling the period of 1954-1962 when about 13,000 of the original Wolverines were produced. Other than a little holster wear, this pistol is in excellent condition. It will be a great addition to any collection.

    – Original box and paperwork

Designed in 1956 by Robert Hillberg the Whitney Wolverine was the advanced “space-aged” pistol of its time. By today’s standards, its 23oz weight certainly isn’t setting any records, but for a non-polymer handgun, it is still fairly light.

Its designer learned aluminum casting during WWII, and would later go on to work for High Standard Manufacturing. This certainly gives the gun a storied past, and as looks go I’m torn between how sleek it is, and how it sorta looks like a prop gun.

There’s certainly no shortage of 10rd 22LR pistols on the market today.  But maybe there’s a collector out there that’s been looking for this particular Wolverine to add to their collection.
