National Police Ammunition has just announced the latest addition to its ammunition lineup. The new 115grain 9mm +P ammo will make use of NPAs H.E.L.O (High Expansion, Law Enforcement, Ordinance) bullet which is already in use with several law enforcement agencies.

National Police Ammunition Introduces New 9mm SCHP +P HELO Defense Round

The HELO bullet features a solid copper hollow point with interior skives for reliable expansion. The NPAs line of proprietary ammunition was specifically designed for law enforcement to pass and exceed the FBI standards.

The advantage of the HELO round lies in its makeup. While bonded jacketed bullets are the standard they often break apart upon impact and shed mass while expanding. The HELO’s solid high-grade virgin copper construction allows maximum penetration and 100% mass retention while reliably expanding due to the interior skives.  NPA is able to achieve this through a heat-treating process that hardens the copper to an ideal spot on the Rockwell scale.

The HELO bullet has also shown itself to be more than capable of defeating barriers and still maintaining its expansion as an added benefit. While other hollow point rounds will become “plugged” by debris entering the cavity, the HELO has demonstrated that this does not happen when penetrating heavy clothing, drywall, and even plywood.

The HELO also features a black oxide coating that helps to reduce copper fouling in barrels and also reduces drag for maintaining a consistent velocity without overpressuring the cartridge. The HELO was designed to hit all the benchmarks of the FBI Protocol Test, even penetrating at the minimum length of 12” into the bare gel from a Glock 43 sub-compact pocket pistol and will also penetrate an average of 15” of gel from a full-size defense pistol averaging 1,150 FPS from a 4” barrel.
