Canada Bans Some Guns, Rocket Launchers and Mortars Too

A shocking announcement blared its way across the nation of Canada on May 1st as the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau ordered the banning of over 1,500 different models of firearms. However, despite claims to the contrary, the bans of so-called “military-style” firearms actually encompass far more than the Prime Minister lets on.

For the casual observer, the ban looks to be targeting only the “style” of weapons used during the attacks that preceded this ban between April 18th and 19th of this year. In actuality, the ban goes a step beyond that and targets firearms that even law-abiding Canadians can’t own. What I’m saying here is that many of the “firearms” on the list are either not even for sale on the civilian market.

For example, in addition to firearms like AR-15s, Mini-14s, and other semi-automatic sporting rifles, the list includes some pretty asinine weapons like the US Made FIM-92 Stinger Missile Launcher. Not only would it be nearly impossible (if not literally impossible) to obtain such a weapon legally on the civilian market, the cost alone would bar all but the most dedicated from obtaining the weapon. The current market price for a single FIM-92 Stinger Missle unit comes in at a cool $38,000 USD (tax not included).

Other weird items included on the list that clearly are unobtainable by civilians include things like 81mm mortars, South African 20mm Anti-Material Rifles, Wire Guided Rocket Launchers, and 40mm grenade launchers. In addition, websites that don’t even sell firearms like AR15.com are entirely banned in the country.

I suppose that all the extraneous items could fall in line with the “military-style” portion of the weapons ban, but to me, they seem outside of the realm of what I would consider being a firearm. Some caveats do exist though for owners of such weapons. The Prime Minister’s plan also calls for a two-year amnesty period in which owners of guns on the list will be compensated for seized guns.

There is also talk of current owners being allowed to keep the rifles included in the order but they would eventually have to be seized upon the owner’s death. The order finally calls for a $250 million dollar buyback program, however, this buyback has not been authorized or funded by the Canadian government.

This type of ban and all the firearms (firearms is a loose term in this context) that it includes just goes to show that the Canadian government is wholly ignorant of Canadian gun owners’ interest in firearms. Either that or they’ve just foiled Canada’s greatest supervillain who just happens to own all the rocket launchers, mortars, and grenade launchers on that list.

“Now I can’t proceed with my plans of conquering Canada! They banned all my weapons, gosh darn it.”
