Famed 3D Printer and firearms manufacturer Cody Wilson and his platform DEFCAD are back online after a long stint of legal battles. This time the plan is to filter out users so that the online repository does not run afoul of United States International Traffic in Arms Regulations(ITAR) rules.

Many of you who know names like Ivanthetroll, ctrlpew, Jstark1809 and FreeMenDontAsk will no doubt see them again on DEFCAD. Awesome designs like the FGC-9, Lopoint pistol and the Plastikov will all be available among over 5,500 files already on the site with more coming in.

To avoid troubles like in the past, Cody Wilson and DEFCAD are using all the tools available to make sure that the site complies with ITAR export restrictions. This involves having to sign up to the site in order to access the files and only users located within the United States will be allowed access to the site. For an annual fee of $50 Cody Wilson describes the new setup for DEFCAD as a “Netflix for Guns” model.

While keen readers will no doubt see how these downloaded files can be spread around freely once acquired, Cody Wilson hasn’t stated it as a concern as he says ” it’s not quite living, in reality, to assume that you can 100 percent secure information that’s online.

Many of the designs on the site are already free domain but having them behind the paywall will help insulate DEFCAD and the contributors to the site from any legal trouble regarding ITAR law. Another benefit for both DEFCAD and its partners is the pledge system. The site will allow users of the site to send pledges to specific DEFCAD partners whose work they admire and want to support. This is a great model that further connects the designers with the users and will help keep free domain firearms coming.
