SILENCER SATURDAY #118: Suppressing Rimfire With The Rex Silentium SEG

Modular silencers have enjoyed a burst of renewed interest in the last few years. The ability to shorten or lengthen one suppressor addresses several NFA challenges. For one, for those that want to own only ones silencer for a particular caliber, a modular model will give you options. A modular suppressor is also adaptable for a variety of hosts – micro pistols will benefit from a short suppressor, while rifles geared towards optimizing sound suppression will benefit from a longer suppressor. Where I think modularity in the silencer world makes the most sense is in the rimfire calibers.

Unlike suppressing centerfire/supersonic cartridges, I have high expectations when suppressing subsonic rimfire rounds. This is one of the few times that I prioritize decibel reduction over most other features.

Rex Silentium – SEG Disassembly And Parts

The front end cap unscrews with a box wrench or socket. The wipe is attached to the end cap with an adhesive .

The extended sections of the SEG contain aluminum baffles with clips/mouse holes.

The mount, blast chamber and blast baffles are made from stainless steel.

The remaining two sections are made from aluminum.

The SEG is held together by sandwiching the baffles between the end caps and the middle thread section.

The SEG represents the evolution of many unique development cycles to find the intersection of suppression, simplicity and economy. Configurable into one of three lengths, no special tools needed for maintenance or reconfiguration. A common 3/4″ wrench or socket is all that is needed. Built from hardened 17-4 Stainless Steel (190KSI tensile strength) and 7075 Aluminum, it can take a hell of a beating. Did we mention quiet? In its full length configuration it is impressively quiet across the full range of 22 and 17 caliber rimfirecartridges.

The primary segment is engraved at the very back giving it maximum survivability in the event of a baffle strike or other failure. The first two baffles are hardened 17-4 stainless steel as these baffles take the brunt of the high velocity gasses and abrasion from carbon. For best and critical suppression, use the shortest barrel available with standard velocity 22LR. Keep it clean and remember that after cleaning use some ablative gel (petroleum jelly or similar) on all internal parts before reassembly. Rex Silentium SEG – Observations

The SEG met my expectations for sound reduction. It was awesomely quiet on the Ruger RPR and the GLOCK 44 in its full length configuration.

Here’s what I liked:

• Excellent suppression – very quiet on both the rifle and pistol hosts.
• Baffle shielding – the baffles slid right out with no sign of powder debris leakage.
• Price – $249 is a great value for a modular suppressor.

Here’s what I feel may need some improvement:

• Overall design:
  • The blast section and the middle section are held together with a threaded insert. It can be difficult to remove from either section since there are no wrench flats or bearing surfaces.
  • The wipe is initially held in place with an adhesive and is not retained by a baffle or locking ring. Mine was dislodged in the forward section after a few shots.
  • The baffles have no way to maintain alignment.
    • Although I intentionally moved the clip alignment and still maintained the same POA/POI.

Overall, the suppression levels were great at full length, good at mid length and ok in the short length (to be expected). If you are comfortable with some moderate assembly/disassembly frustrations, the price and the excellent suppression of the SEG is worth a look.
