STORM-SLX Precision Rangefinder

If you don’t know the distance to your target it will make it more difficult – if not impossible in some cases – to get your ballistics right, and hit where you want. Of course, you don’t always have to “hit” something. It can be good to know the distance to something without the need to destroy it sometimes.

L3Harris Technologies has now supplied over 3,000 STORM-SLX Precision Rangefinders to help the US Army find out the distance to different targets. STORM stands for Small Tactical Optical Rifle-Mounted Micro-Laser Rangefinder – SLX.

The L3Harris STORM-SLX Laser Range finder incorporates an advanced erbium glass laser for reduced Size, Weight, and Power (SWaP). The system also incorporates NIR and visible aim lasers, a NIR illumination laser with adjustable divergence, a high accuracy DMC, and an external GPS interface, providing the same features and functions as the current STORM-PI in a smaller, lighter, extended performance (SLX) package.

Highlights:

-The 3,000th delivery milestone accomplished at the beginning of 2020

-STORM-SLX enables the soldier to locate and engage targets with better accuracy

-The company has delivered more than 17,000 STORM precision targeting systems in 15 years

L3Harris Technologies (NYSE:LHX) delivered the 3,000th STORM-SLX precision rangefinder to the U.S. Army earlier this year. The Small Tactical Optical Rifle-Mounted laser rangefinder system with extended performance over it’s predecessor the STORM-PI, is the smallest U.S. Army qualified weapon-mounted laser rangefinder available to the dismounted soldier and is part of the L3Harris STORM family of precision targeting systems. The STORM family continues to be the only U.S. Army qualified laser rangefinders available for the dismounted soldier.

“Our STORM portfolio has supported the U.S. Army for more than 15 years, enabling the dismounted soldier to locate and engage targets with much greater accuracy, significantly improving overall mission effectiveness,” said Lynn Bollengier, President, Integrated Vision Solutions, L3Harris. “We are proud of the advantage our STORM family of precision targeting systems delivers to our soldiers and we continue to invest in next-generation technologies, like our STORM 2 rangefinder, to further increase that advantage.”

Our STORM 2 rangefinder will provide soldiers with enhanced performance at extended ranges during field maneuvers, surveillance and engagement, while enabling them to remain undetected during dismounted and vehicle-mounted missions. L3Harris received a seven-year, $215 million contract from the U.S. Army for STORM 2 in 2019.

215 Million - 3000 Devices? Ehhhhh.... Correct me if I am wrong, but thats roughly 70k each unit?! You like to burn "money", or you like to enslave a whole nation so you can be 100% a "R&D Military Superiority" Company, mh? No one of the usual jerk in the board ever paid 70k just in taxes, so there you see that it needs 300Million citizens so you can actually fund this nonsens.

@Mr.T Yeah, $1 per meter is about right as a rule of thumb. Even the military ones that are good for 25km are about $25k.

So, it has a compass? But this is not enough, it needs some kind of "protractor", I hope that is the right word. Especially for hill country and mountainous terrain. Otherwise one will have difficulties to find the right distance for the ballistic calculations or the GPS coordinate.

@hacedeca Yikes because i'd have thought it was largely an essential feature!
