Photo Of The Day – This is a rare sight captured by Jan-Phillipp Weisswange. You’re looking at the G95K (which is an HK416 A7 “Short” 14.4″ barrel) with an HK269 Grenade Launcher.

This is, so far, the only picture I’ve seen of the two systems combined. As a bonus, it has the green/brown colour scheme, the long handguard and the EOTech sight with magnifier.

The HK269 is an enhanced development of the GLM/M320 in calibre 40 mm x 46 (low velocity) with the option to unlock the barrel either towards the left or right.
The interfaces to mount it on assault rifles and the option to use it as a stand-alone weapon remain unchanged.
Application range of up to 350 metres. The HK269 is suitable for both lethal and non-lethal ammunition.

The French Army is using a similar setup for their HK416F (with 14.5″ barrels), and they bought 10,767 pieces of the HK269. Check here for more details and some pictures.

Why are all the Western underbarrel GLs so... huge? I mean, for contrast:

  @int19h Well in the case of the M203/M320 vs the GP-25/30/34, the NATO grenade is cased while the Russian one is caseless. No need for a bigger launcher if you have caseless.
  Beyond that, the 203 has the excuse of being the first underbarrel grenade launcher so it gets a pass because it was trying to get the idea done right the first time. The 320 has no excuses, that one's all HK stupidity and designer incompetence. Either that or they hire art rejects instead of soldiers to design gear.

  @Major Tom So basically the difference is that Soviets done it right on the first try, while NATO is stuck with a legacy ammunition design that constraints how GLs themselves must be made - but the cost of changing the ammo is deemed too high?
  Or are there some disadvantages to caseless in this application that preclude its adoption in the West?

  @int19h There’s the issue of ammunition dimensions and firing range. The 320 isn’t exactly a stellar example either.
