I know what many of you are thinking right now: “Pete, this is a major crisis, no one cares about your g*ddamn short barrels, silencers or vertical fore grips!” That’s where you are wrong, friend. In these times that try men’s and women’s souls, the things that bring us joy are even more important. While you wait for that incubation period to pass, you don’t need an additional timeline weighing you down. Have no fear, our friends at the American Suppressor Association are reporting that the ATF’s NFA Division are processing NFA applications at a standard pace. Insert joke about the ATF, NFA timelines, the $200 ransom and the Constitution here.
In a real end-of-the-world situation, no one is going to care that you have a 14.5” unpapered AR-15 to help keep you out of the FEMA lines. But since we are likely to escape this pandemic mostly unscathed, pay your tax and wait for your stamp – the system is still up and running.

Don’t Panic! NFA Applications Still Being Processed During Coronapocalypse

As you are well aware, the coronavirus is disrupting nearly every facet of society. This morning, ASA spoke with our contacts at ATF to get you the FACTS about the potential impact the coronavirus could have on NFA processing times.
Here is what we know:
- NFA Division is operating as normal.
- At this time, West Virginia (where the NFA Division is located) has no confirmed cases of coronavirus.
- NFA Division is assessing their current remote work operations. They are identifying which staff (examiners and contractors) will be able to work remote if necessary, and are taking the necessary steps to ensure that the transition to remote processing would be as seamless as possible.
Should remote work become necessary, NFA Division will do their best to minimize disruptions and continue processing transfers as accurately and efficiently as possible. For those of you who recall the government shutdown in early 2019, any coronavirus related disruptions will be far less impactful. ASA commends ATF for being proactive in their approach to the coronavirus. We will continue to monitor the situation and provide relevant factual updates as they become available.
