Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to another edition of TFB’s Silencer Saturday brought to you by my friends at Yankee Hill Machine, manufacturers of the new Resonator K 7.62 suppressor. We continue last week’s rimfire suppressor host journey with a look at two very unique silencers – the GSL Pill Box and Pill Box Plus. Designed as “last ditch” devices, these Pill Boxes are the smallest rimfire silencers available on the market. Should you buy one for your NFA collection? Let’s take a look.

Both the Pill Box and Pill Box Plus could be considered covert spy tools used by elite spies like James Bond (Connery not Brosnan). Under two inches in length and weighing in at less than one ounce, the Pill Bottle fits right at home on a key ring or zipper pull. Capped on one end by a threaded insert and a polymer wipe on the other, this silencer is designed to be run wet. That is, one milliliter of gel or grease will stay put almost indefinitely until you are ready to take that shot.

    A quick note on wipes:

Wipes – plastic/polymer disks that act as a disposable baffle by allowing a bullet to squeeze through while trapping expanding gasses and noise behind it – is older silencer technology that still has its place. Each wipe has a relatively short lifespan requiring the need for replacement. Because the ATF considers wipes to be silencer parts, and since consumers are not allowed to possess spare silencer parts, owning “extra” wipes is not allowed. A manufacturer and SOT can repair a silencer, and a FFL can replace wipes on a one for one basis. I’ve heard that places like Amazon sell punches and wipe material, but again, it is illegal for a non-licensed individual to manufacture silencer parts without an approved Form 1 and paying the $200 NFA tax.

I wish I could advise you differently, but the law is the law and I’d be a terrible Silencer Saturday host if I suggested alternative methods for replacement.

However, GSL Technology has just debuted the Pill Box Plus – a standard Pill Box suppressor with an extra chamber that stores additional wipes for use. Since these aren’t spare parts, the user can rotate them into the Pill Box as needed.

And yet another note on being covert:

I feel like such a fun killer today. While it’s definitely cool to own a suppressor that is small enough to be secreted in various small hiding places, remember that silencers are legally firearms. So even an inadvertent slip past a security checkpoint could have serious legal ramifications. Be careful and do not try to LARP as 007 with the Pill Box attached to the key ring to your basement apartment and convertible ‘87 Mazda Miata. Again, stupid laws, but I’d be committing NFA malpractice if I advised you otherwise.

    Let’s get back on track.

Above: GSL Technology Pill Box Plus (top) and Pill Box (mounted).

The Pill Box is the smallest suppressor available for the 22LR cartridge. The unit is considered as a “last ditch” item for self-defense and is not designed for target shooting at the range. The Pill Box uses a special wipe which should last at least fifty rounds minimum before needing replacement.

This item can be sent back to the factory for repair/replacement of the wipe. A copy of the Form 4 and a letter explaining that the item is being returned for repair is needed in order to meet the ATF requirements. If a dealer has a 07 FFL, they can replace the wipe for you.

The Pill Box Plus adds a separate pre-chamber that contains two additional wipes. This pre-chamber is not meant to be shot through – it is only a storage container for the additional wipes. (I’m so tempted to shoot it as one unit. Must resist.)

    Shooting the GSL Pill Box

Quietness is relative. If you are expecting perfectly silent from a 1.5” suppressor on a short barreled pistol, I don’t think I’ll ever present you with a can that will impress you. On the other hand, with properly adjusted expectations, a new wipe and a few drops of ablative liquid, the Pill Box will turn some heads. Mount it on a bolt gun or a lever action rifle with a 16” barrel and these tiny GSLs will have you wondering why a six ounce, six inch rimfire silencer is a good idea.

Depending on the ablative material you use, expect to recharge every 6-10 shots. The wipe will last 25-30 shots.

    Pros:

    • Near invisible weight
    • Near invisible length
    • Sub $200
    • ”Quiet”
    • Super fun

    Cons:

    • Wipes need replacing
    • Should be run wet
    • Stamp costs more than the can
    • Not “quiet”

If you already have a rimfire suppressor and are looking for something fun and unique, the GSL Pill Box or Pill Box Plus gives you the ability to play 007 in your own backyard. License to kill not included.

Thanks for joining us for another edition of TFB’s Silencer Saturday. Be safe and we’ll see you back here next weekend.
