[SHOT 2020] New 27 Nosler Cartridge Joins the Nosler Family of Cartridges

At SHOT Show 2020, Nosler announced a new .270 caliber addition to their cartridge family – the 27 Nosler. In their press release, Nosler describes this cartridge as an offering “that redefines performance as radically now as the 270 Winchester did upon its introduction in 1925“.

With an overall length of 3.34″, this is a long action cartridge. It is based on the .404 Jeffery case as other Nosler cartridges with the exception of the .22 Nosler. In order to prevent the 28 Nosler from being accidentally chambered in a 27 Nosler chamber, the latter has a shorter length from the base to shoulder (2.109″ vs 2.166″).

The 27 Nosler is a long-range hunting cartridge designed to outperform all the commercially available popular .277 caliber cartridges thanks to its larger case capacity. According to Nosler: “The 27 Nosler case has 42% more case capacity than the 270 Winchester, 25% more than the 270 WSM and 12.5% more than the 270 Weatherby.“. The ballistic data comparison of this new cartridge with the mentioned competitors can be found below:

In addition to the large capacity, this cartridge is designed to be used with a longer leade in the chamber and faster twist rate of 1:8.5″ that will allow chambering and stabilizing modern long-range bullets.

Nosler will offer this cartridge in their Trophy Grade line loaded with a 150gr AccuBond bullets and in the Trophy Grade-LR line with 165gr AccuBond Long Range (ABLR) bullets. The brass will be also available separately and the most suitable cartridge that the company suggests using for forming the 27 Nosler cases is the 30 Nosler. Nosler also chambers their M48 rifles in this caliber.
