Unsurprisingly, my first question was about the availability of threaded barrels for suppressor use. While a threaded barrel for the new Ruger-57 will surely be a factory option in the future, there will those of us who will not want to wait. So, with all the renewed excitement in the 5.7x28mm round, let’s take a look at some 5.7mm suppressor and host options.

SILENCER SATURDAY #106: 5.7mm Suppressor And Host Options

Ruger’s 5.7 announcement nearly broke the internet. The cartridge has enjoyed a boutique-style popularity dominated initially by the FN FiveseveN and P90 platforms and more recently with the CMMG Banshee line of carbine/short barreled rifles. But until Ruger dropped their 5.7x28mm bomb drop, shooters did not have an affordable pistol option. But now that we do, unfortunately, the new Ruger-57 does not come with a factory threaded barrel as an option.

5.7mm Suppressors

Note: Always check your manufacturer’s guidelines before using a suppressor with a caliber or cartridge specifically designed for your model.

Depending on your chosen platform, there are a wide variety of silencer options for the 5.7mm cartridge. For rifle and carbine (pistol or short barrel rifle) firearms, shorter and lighter rifle 5.56mm suppressors like the YHM Turbo and Turbo K would be an excellent choice. If I was suppressing a PS90, I’d pair it with a Turbo K with the 16” barrel or a full-sized Turbo if you decide to go the SBR route. The same goes for the CMMG Banshee: a shorter, light weight rifle suppressor will rule the day.

For pistols, I would lean towards a .22 rimfire suppressor that is specifically rated to handle the 5.7x28mm cartridge. Typically, rimfire silencers built to handle higher pressure rounds like the 5.7 are steel and not aluminum builds, increasing the weight penalty. Rimfire suppressors will also have less internal volume than their rifle silencer counterparts, possibly reducing sound suppression performance.

Historically there have been very few dedicated 5.7mm silencers. The now out of production Gemtech SFN-57 and SAR-57 were built specifically for the FN FiveseveN pistol with the SFN-57 threaded for the 10mm thread pitch found on the allusive factory threaded barrels that were never made commercially available (officially). The SAR-57 is threaded 1/2×28.

5.7mm Suppressor Hosts

Aside from the Banshee and AR57 upper receivers, 5.7mm suppressor hosts were driven almost entirely by aftermarket support. Tornado Technologies will thread a factory FiveseveN barrel whereas EFK and Jarvis build complete barrels, preserving the factory barrel. I imagine that they will start offering Ruger-57 options as well.

FN PS90

The PS90 will require some barrel work since factory threaded barrels are not commercially available as far as I can tell. It is also blowback operated which may not make for the greatest suppressor host in comparison to delayed blowback operation hosts.

CMMG Banshee

The Banshee uses a radial delayed blowback operation and comes with a factory threaded 1/2×28 barrel.

5.7x28mm Ammunition

FN produces the majority of the 5.7x28mm ammunition, but limits the better-performing loads to MIL/LE agency purchasing only. There are a number of reasonably knowledgeable individual (RKI) resources available online regarding the functional ballistics of the 5.7mm rounds available for civilian purchase. Federal/Speer has just announced a new 5.7x28mm defensive round that will also deserve a close look and testing.

Subsonic 5.7 Options

There are a number of 5.7x28mm options available loaded by specialty manufacturers. Obviously for maximum quiet, staying below about 1050fps will be important.

Wrap Up:

Is the announcement of the Ruger-57 enough to get me into the 5.7x28mm game? Probably. If they had released a factory threaded model, I would have been burning up the phone to make the first purchase. The challenge will be to either wait for a factory threaded Ruger-57, invest in a current Ruger-57 and send it out to Tornado Technologies for threading or go with a FiveseveN or PS90 SBR option. I do believe we’ll see Ruger make factory threaded barrels within six to nine months (I have no inside knowledge, I’m just speculating based on Ruger’s manufacturing capabilities. I’d imagine that aftermarket Ruger-57 barrels will be available sometime in 2020.

Obviously, without subsonic ammo, suppressing the 5.7x28mm cartridge will not exactly be quiet. But if you live under the “suppress everything” mantra, the new Ruger-57 should make for a fun host.
