Sturm, Ruger & Company has published a press release announcing the second revolver in their newest Super GP100 custom shop revolver line. Earlier, in April of 2019, Ruger released the first model of Super GP100 which was chambered in .357 Magnum. The main difference of the new wheelgun is the caliber it is chambered in – 9mm Luger.

Ruger Super GP100 revolver in 9mm has a much shorter cylinder than its .357 Magnum sibling because of the overall length difference of 9x19mm and .357 Magnum cartridges. Due to the shorter cylinder, the barrel protrudes further back into the frame and as a result, the 9mm revolver’s barrel is half an inch longer (6″ vs 5.5″) at the same overall length of eleven inches. The 9mm gun is also slightly lighter weighing in at 45.6oz versus the 47 oz the .357 Magnum one.

The frame and barrel shroud of the 9mm revolver are bare stainless steel as opposed to the black PVD finish of these parts seen on the .357 Magnum version. The stainless steel cylinder and cold hammer forged barrel of the 9mm gun still retain the black PVD finish and both guns come with hand-finished smooth Hogue hardwood grips.

The model name Super GP100 may make you think that these are simply tweaked GP100s, however, this family of revolvers is rather a hybrid of a GP100 and Redhawk. It is based on a Redhawk frame size that allows having a large 8-round cylinder but it also features the dual-spring clockwork of the GP100/Super Redhawk which is more suitable for being tuned and allowed Ruger engineers to design a light and smooth competition trigger.

Here is how Ruger describes some of the features of these revolvers that make them competition-ready wheelguns.

Custom Shop Super GP100 revolvers feature polished and optimized internals, a centering boss on the trigger and centering shims on the hammer, which combine to produce a smooth, double-action trigger pull and a crisp, consistent let-off. Together, the adjustable rear sight and quick-change fiber optic front sight create a great sight picture for rapid target acquisition.

The half-lug, 6″ sleeve and shroud barrel is contoured for fast manual ejection and features an 11° target crown for competition-level accuracy. Aesthetic cuts in the barrel shroud and cylinder help reduce overall weight and improve balance. The cylinder and extractor are cut for moon clips to speed reloading during competition. Additionally, the cylinder is heavily fluted and the length is reduced in order to decrease the overall mass and increase rotational speed.
