Reader’s Choice BEST Pump-Action Shotgun: Remington 870

Reader’s Choice BEST Pump Shotgun: Remington 870

Reader’s Choice BEST Pump Shotgun: Remington 870

For the month of October and our Reader’s Choice voting, we voted on the BEST Pump-Action Shotgun you could potentially have. For some of us, that open-ended statement might need to fill the need of hunting, home defense, competitive shooting, recreation or oddly enough all of the above! This month’s voting was as much of what do you believe is the BEST Pump-Action Shotgun, but it also begged the question of what do you use shotguns for? Between 10 fairly different options to vote on your chosen winner was… (drum roll please)… the Remington 870 Express Field/Home Combo 12 Gauge!!!

Reader’s Choice BEST Pump Shotgun: Remington 870

We started out with a moderate initial list of suggestions from our staff and had some rambunctious suggestions through the Comments section as well. For the final voting results we will provide you with the Top 5 because below that the voting falls off for the remaining pump-action shotguns considerably. Let’s get this rolling, and as always, shoot us some of your thoughts in the Comments below! We always appreciate your feedback.

TFB READER’S CHOICE BEST pump-action shotgun

    1. Remington 870 Express Field/Home Combo 12 Gauge [MSRP $550] – 26.63%
    2. Mossberg 500 Flex All-Purpose 12 Gauge [MSRP $504] – 14.26%
    3. Benelli M3 Convertible 12 Gauge Semi-Auto/Pump-Action [MSRP $1,599] – 10.31%
    4. Mossberg Maverick 88 Security/Field Combo 12 Gauge [MSRP $259] – 8.93%
    5. Mossberg 590 Shockwave Nightstick 12 Gauge [MSRP $539] – 6.25%
    • Remaining Miscellaneous Voting Choices – 33.61%

As can be seen by the voting results, the Remington 870 is a dominant favorite among readers which is not much of a surprise. It is a solid workhorse of a shotgun and has been around for many decades. The voting is moderately close from 2nd through 5th place which made for a slightly more interesting race to the podium. What is nearly as impressive as Remington laying claim to the crown of BEST Pump-Action Shotgun is that Mossberg had 3 different (but similar) models make the Top 5! Their Mossberg 500 Flex is a modern and customizable spin on their legendary workhorse. The Maverick 88 is their economy model that still can interchange and swap parts with a Model 500. Finally, their 590 Shockwave, which is king of the shorty shotguns, broke into the Top 5 with 4 other full-size pump-action shotguns. So between the chameleon Benelli, the timeless Remington 870, and a strong showing from Mossberg that rounds out your Top 5 for the Reader’s Choice voting of the BEST Pump-Action Shotgun for the month of October!

Designed with the same durability and reliability as the legendary Model 870 Wingmaster, these quick-pointing 12 slug guns provide rifle-like accuracy with their 18 ½ smooth bore barrels with rifle sights, especially when combined with our Premier Accu-Tip or Copper Solid slugs. Supplied with a variety of vent-rib smoothbore field barrels, Remington Combo guns provide all the value a shotgun hunter needs. Both the fore-end and stock are crafted from a durable, weatherproof synthetic material to compliment the non-reflective matte metal finish. The 1-inch shorter stock also includes a solid rubber recoil pad. And like every other Model 870 shotgun, you get twin action bars for smooth cycling and a receiver machined from a solid block of hardened steel for unmatched durability.

    READER COMMENTS

When we run the Reader’s Choice every month what can be more entertaining than the results you guys and gals create through your voting is your side commentary. This month was no exception because you bust our chops and you have some pretty good one-liners. We appreciate you engaging in our monthly Reader’s Choice polls and growing along with us. So let’s dive into some of the more cringe-worthy, feelings-triggering, and hilarious comments you all posted!

maverick 88: it works, its cheap and I think every shooter has owned one at some point. its like a beater you learned to drive stick shift on.

    -Scott Tx

That is actually a fairly good analogy. The Mossberg Maverick 88 is a solid choice and no disrespect to Mossberg or that specific model, but it is something for many shooters to get their feet wet with and chase better models from that point on.

    Traditionally minded: Ithaca 37

    Tacticool: Fabarm STF-12

    -Grump

It is like you have a split personality disorder 😉 Just kidding, but we totally get what you mean. God gave us two hands, right?

I dig the Halo vibe of the KS7

That is definitely a shotgun fit for the USA Space Force, but simultaneously, that kind of space age look can be an acquired taste for many shooters.

I Love the Browning(action) smooth, slick and fast but too expensive. The Remington is right price but the action you will never get to be smooth, slick and fast. And that is where the Mossberg comes in, its the right price and with a small amount of polishing and oil it will be as smooth, slick and fast as the Browning. Plus the Mossburg is the Timex of pump shotguns in that it can take some abuse and keeps on working. No it ain’t pretty but pretty and a pedigree name don’t put meat on the table or bad guys down.

It seems like you need to head to your local gun store and purchase your own Top 5 pump-action shotguns 😉

Winchester Model 97 Police. Slam fire and a steel butt plate make for really memorable heavy load sessions and good training for proper shoulder and hand placement.

    -JJJingleheimerSchmidt

That is definitely a solid throwback suggestion!

Benelli Nova. Less accessories than others. But it will chamber up to 3.5in standard, ghost ring sights available standard, excellent ergos, and the build in magazine disconnect so you can swap loads without having to unshoulder the gun.

    -Anomanom

We are actually surprised more people did not suggest Benelli’s bread ‘n butter pump-action in the Nova…

    Sig p365.

    -Swarf

    Who invited this guy?! Haha!

They way things go on this website, I’d almost be willing to be Glock wins… 🙂

    -George Smythson

Bahahaha! Alright, how do you know James Reeves and who paid you to write that 😉
