I first saw the pre-production prototypes of VOA aluminum handguards for Remington 870 and Mossberg 500 shotguns at Strike Industries booth at SHOT Show 2019. Recently, the company has announced that these forearms are now available for purchase. Let’s see what features the VOA forearms offer.
The VOA handguards are made by machining 6061 aluminum extrusions. They feature a hard coat anodized finish of black or FDE colors. These handguards have M-LOK accessory mounting slots on sides and bottom – in total 10 slots. The overall external geometry and the built-in front and rear hand stops are designed to provide a better purchase when gripping the forearm and working the action. With an overall length of just over 8″, the VOA forearm does not overlap the receiver in its rearmost position thus becoming compatible with ammunition side saddles. The width and height of these handguards are 1.97″ and 2.54″ respectively.
The Strike Industries VOA handguards are drop-in accessories not requiring any changes to the firearm. The installation is also a really simple process. It is basically a matter of removing the factory handguard and installing the VOA handguard instead of it with the same procedure. Here is a video showing the installation process.
Here is also important compatibility information as seen on the Strike Industries website:
NOTE: Not compatible with the optional Remington heatshield, removal is required before use.
NOTE: Not compatible with the optional Mossberg heatshield, removal is required before use. Also not compatible with 14″ 590 Shockwave, 500, 535, Maverick 88, and AOW models.
Tell us in the comments section what forearm do you run on your defensive shotgun and is this new product attractive enough to swap it in and give it a try.
