Today’s Photo Of The Day is submitted by a TFB reader. It depicts an Indian marksman/sniper from a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) unit with his Heckler & Koch PSG1 precision rifle. You can also spot a Glock 17 pistol in the drop leg holster.

The Heckler & Koch PSG1 is a semi-automatic precision rifle chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO. It is based on the company’s venerable G3 rifle, however, it has a number of design changes. The PSG1 utilizes the same roller delayed blowback action as the G3 but its rollers have flat surfaces to prevent them from rotating around their axis thus providing a more consistent lockup and headspacing. There is also a device similar to AR-15’s forward assist and notches on the bolt carrier designed to allow a noiseless closing of the action. Barrels of these rifles are free-floated, have a heavy profile and polygonal rifling. PSG1 also has an ergonomic pistol grip, an improved buttstock with an adjustable cheekpiece and LOP as well as a handguard with a bottom rail for attaching bipods and tripods.

The Central Reserve Police Force came into existence as Crown Representative’s Police on 27th July 1939. It became the Central Reserve Police Force on enactment of the CRPF Act on 28th December 1949. It has completed 80 years of glorious history. The Force has grown into a big organization with 246 Bns, (including 208 executive Bns, 6 Mahila Bns, 15 RAF Bns, 10 CoBRA Bns, 5 Signal Bns and 1 Special Duty Group, 1 Parliament Duty Group), 43 Group Centres, 20 Training Institutions, 3 CWS, 7 AWS, 3 SWS, 4 Composite Hospitals of 100 bed and 17 Composite Hospitals of 50 bed.

Mission

The mission of the Central Reserve Police Force shall be to enable the government to maintain Rule of Law, Public Order and Internal Security effectively and efficiently, to Preserve National Integrity and Promote Social Harmony and Development by upholding supremacy of the Constitution.
