All Eyes On YOU: TFB’s Best Discreet Rifle Bags And Cases

    Discreet Rifle Cases

If you believe the mainstream media, the current state of affairs in America has labeled firearms as public enemy number one. The result is that gun owners are left with one of two choices: either be labeled as one of those people or hide in the shadows as John or Jane “Clandestine” Doe. Where the rubber meets the road, however, is when shooters are on the move to ranges, training courses or other locations. If you decide to not call attention to your ballistic beliefs, a discreet rifle case or bag can be a great way to transport your guns. I polled this staff for recommendations and came up with some of the best available options. We’ll talk about pistol cases another time.

All Eyes On YOU: TFB’s Best Discreet Rifle Bags And Cases

Before we talk about discreet rifle cases, I have a few words of wisdom to share:

    • Even the most non-descript gun case does not protect from wandering eyes and hands. Any gun that is not under your immediate control should be secured.
    • As always, check your local, state and federal laws for the rules of weapons transport. For example, in some circumstances, pistols can be transported loaded while rifles may not.
    • Use common sense – discreet rifle cases aren’t a license to carry in non-permissive environments.

In terms of discreet rifle bags and cases, there are a few different schools of thought:

    1. A container that is repurposed from another activity
    2. A purpose-built gun case that looks like a normal bag, backpack or sling.
    3. A purpose-built gun case that looks like athletic equipment or a musical instrument.

Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of each one.

    Repurposed Discreet Rifle Cases

Many shooters decide to transport their long guns in tennis racket bags, tool boxes or another style of case from another activity. The good part of this type of carry is that the bags are usually inexpensive (or free) and they blend into everyday life batter than some purpose-built options. The downside is that since they aren’t made for weapons transport, padding and sizes may not be perfect. Also, your fake activity bag may not fit into your surroundings: lugging a tennis racket bag around a city with zero tennis courts is just weird. Also, equipment cases can signal expensive hobbies or trades: that Fabergé Egg knapsack might catch more attention than a standard long gun case.

Oh, and if you want to stay covert while carrying your tennis racket discreet rifle case, at least take the time to learn about the game (Andre Agassi is long retired).

    Wilson Advantage Tennis Bag Series

    $19.99

1 large main compartment with an internal accessory side compartment. 1 large exterior pocket suitable for a tennis racket. 2 External pockets for smaller equipment. Carry handles plus padded shoulder strap.

Purpose-Built Discreet Rifle Cases: Bags and Packs

The main advantage of a purpose-built case is sizing and padding. Whereas a generic bag may look like an everyday item, it may not be fitted for the AR15 profile. Besides, a gun case manufacturer should know how to support a long gun and can make heavy-duty handles and zippers. Although these bags are largely Gray Man suited, a trained eye will spot your cargo in no time. Luckily, there really aren’t many trained eyes in the world anymore (thanks a lot, Gen X).

This style of discreet rifle case has been my go-to choice for 20 years, starting with the old Assault Systems and Eagle Industries bags and most recently the Haley Strategic Incog bag listed below. One side benefit for those who really live life on the edge: some of these setups are cut to accept ballistic panels. Detroit residents might want to start looking at these options first.

Purpose-Built Discreet Rifle Cases: Instruments and Equipment

The one category of discreet rifle bags I have yet to explore are the purpose-built long gun bags disguised as musical instruments or equipment. If you ignore my obsession with 80’s tunes, I have zero musical ability. Which means anyone who sees me lugging a guitar or cello case to the car is going to know something isn’t right. And the potential for strangers to strike up conversations about your band is pretty high, starting with requests for Stairway To Heaven at the coffee shop down the street from the range. Plus, musical instruments can be a target for theft as well.

But for those that actually do own and play a guitar, cello, saxophone or flute (large pen gun style rifles) a discreet rifle case in the shape of a musical instrument may be the right choice.

    Wrap Up:

Chances are you’ll buy and use several discreet rifle cases before you settle on one that works for you. If you find one you really like, please let us know.

As an aside, a when discretion isn’t an issue, a Pelican Rifle Case is still my weapons transport vehicle of choice.

Have fun, be safe and thanks for reading TFB.
