SILENCER SATURDAY #79: The Dead Air Wolfman 9mm Suppressor

As we have discussed in the past, the death of the pistol caliber carbine has been greatly exaggerated. In fact the explosion of manufacturers with models chambered in everything from “King Pistol Round” 9mm to the needle-nose 5.7mm round is great evidence to the fact that shooters, especially Americans, can’t get enough of their oversized pistols. Myself included.

But what makes a compact pistol caliber carbine fun – it’s size – can sometimes be ruined with the addition of a full sized silencer. The beauty of a modular model like the Dead Air Wolfman is that you are able to decide between maximum suppression versus having a small setup without the need for two different silencers. Let’s take a look.

Right off the bat you can see the Wolfman is capable of handling fire from a solid variety of hosts. If it were me, I would have included a 1/2×28 piston setup for pistol users. And if you are interested in supersonic rifle rounds in the Dead Air Wolfman you’ll need a KeyMicro brake which doesn’t appear to be available yet at the time of this writing.

The Wolfman comes wipe-capable and includes an OEM faucet washer. Shooters who are concerned with the possibility of leaky faucets can purchase these generic washers to have on hand in case of emergencies. Just be advised that you cannot have spare silencer parts on hand. So each used wipe must be destroyed prior to “making” a replacement (i.e. not fixing a faucet).

The wipe is sandwiched between the end cap and a threaded locking piece.

The end cap on the Dead Air Wolfman is reminiscent of those found on their other product lines.

The included tool unscrews the end cap from the tube.

The 3/4” Flat Faucet Washer.

The wipe pushes into the end cap snuggly.

The wipe is secured with the retaining collar/ring using a 1/2” drive socket.

And the end cap is reinstalled on either the full sized baffle stack or the shortened baffle stack.

In its shortest configuration, the Dead Air Wolfman reminds me of the SilencerCo Omega 9K with the added modularity benefits of a full sized silencer and more.

The sizes of the Dead Air Wolfman sections are roughly a 2/3 to 1/3 ratio.

As noted above, it ships with a 1/2×28 direct thread mount.

The blast chamber is indeed generous, helping to control blowback and reduce at-ear noise.

At a little over 14.1 ounces in its full length, the Dead Air Wolfman is a bit heavier than the average pistol suppressor. However, the added modularity, wipe capability and caliber ratings give it a definite edge over current market options.
