Magpul has announced that they’ve started shipping the new D-50 7.62x51mm/.308 Win drum magazine. This magazine was announced at the beginning of the year. As the model designation implies, the D-50 is a 50-round drum.
This magazine is patterned after the company’s D-60 5.56/.223 drum. It is constructed with the Magpul’s Gen3 PMAG material. Besides the standard rounds, the D-50 will also allow loading ammunition that has a slightly longer (2.83″) overall length than the SAAMI specs for the .308 Win (2.81″) such as the M118LR round.
The D-50 drum is designed for AR-10 pattern SR25/M110 rifles. Here are a couple of important compatibility notes quoted from the company’s website:
*NOTE: Compatible with older model Bushmaster .308 ORC, Remington R-25, and DPMS LR308 rifles, but not optimized for bolt lock functionality with newer models based on the DPMS GII design. NOT compatible with Armalite AR-10B, Springfield Armory M1A, Rock River Arms LAR8, FN SCAR 17S, PTR-91, HK417 or any other rifles that utilize M14, FN FAL, or HK 91/G3 patterned magazines.
*Optimized for use only with 7.62×51 NATO/.308 Winchester cartridges. Use with other calibers such as .260 Remington or 6.5 Creedmoor is not recommended.
The height of the D-50 drum magazine is 8.34″ which, according to Magpul, is about the same as the 25-round 7.62/308 PMAG. So if you use the 25-rounders, switching to a D-50 won’t increase the height of the weapon when shooting prone. It is also possible to seat the fully loaded drum into the gun when the bolt is closed. The empty weight of this drum magazine is 1.7 lbs (4.5 lbs loaded).
Loading this drum magazine is done by removing the spring tension first using the ratcheting lever. The magazine features a window at the rear wall which allows seeing the amount of remaining ammunition. The disassembly is accomplished with the use of a flat blade screwdriver or a similar tool. The disassembly/assembly instructions can be found on Magpul’s website.
The Magpul D-50 drum magazine is listed on the company’s website at an MSRP of $149.95. The magazine comes with a dust cover and it is available in black color option only.
