German Army Modernizing their AI Sniper Rifles – G22 becomes G22A2

Accuracy International Ltd. (AI) based in Portsmouth, UK, announced an order to upgrade and retrofit the G22 sniper rifles of the German Armed Forces through its German representative POL-TEC.

The G22, or Gewehr 22 (Rifle), is an AI AWM-F (AI-Arctic Warfare Magnum) chambered in .300 Winchester Magnum. That is 7.62 × 67 mm, as used in the Bundeswehr metric nomenclature.

For their G22 rifles, the Bundeswehr claims an effective range of 1,100 m (1,203 yards).

The plan is to upgrade the current G22 and G22A1 precision sniper rifles of the Bundeswehr to the new G22A2 platform.

780 weapons have been commissioned to be converted, which will be delivered by 2020.

The G22A2 platform will have the new stock of the AX series, which replaces the old AWM-F standard, now out of production. The color will be “AI Pale Brown“, and there will be Picatinny attachments around the free floating barrel for a more modular approach.

The upgrade also includes new optics. Steiner Military 5-25×56 with the TReMoR3 reticle is to be used, which is no coincidence as it’s also used on the German sniper rifle G29.

You can check the German G29 Sniper rifle here and compare it.

You should also check out German GunWork’s copy of the G29, and their amazing Cerakote.

There is no mentioning of a sound suppressor, which I’m sure they are going to use for this system. Perhaps they will use existing ones, or procure these later on.

This video (Dec 2018) has no direct relation to the article, but shows the KSK German Special Forces and their training, with some very challenging shots. It’s in German but worth a look.
