You may never heard about Aguila Ammunition, but they have been around for a long time. The company was founded in 1961, and to this day, ammunition is manufactured in Cuernavaca, Morelos, Mexico.

Aguila Ammunition is the company that brought back 5mm Remington Rimfire Magnum. Original 5mm Rem Magnum was produced only from 1970 to 1974  and owners of bolt action Remington Model 591 and Model 592, chambered for that round, were left without any ammunition for years.

In 2008, Aguila Ammunition began production of 5mm Remington Rimfire Magnum and still remains the only ammo manufacturer that produces this round today.

Recently, Aguila Ammunition presented its new line of affordable defensive handgun ammunition, namely 9MM LUGER 117 GRAIN JHP / JACKETED HOLLOW POINT

We had a very interesting conversation with the company’s representative  and he made a few very solid point. Typically, defensive ammunition has a much heavier bullet – 124 or even 147 grains. But that creates a potential problem for the end user.

We train with cheap ball ammo, typically something like 115 grain FMJ. But our defensive ammo would have a different point of impact compared to our training ammo. It might not be a big deal in most situations, but definitely something to think about.

The solution that Aguila Ammunition representative suggested was to use defensive ammo with lighter projectiles, and their JHP round a created with that concept in mind – it has the same point of impact as the training ammo and very light recoil.

Another difference between Aguila Ammunition  and other ammo manufacturers is that Aguila makes most ammo components in-house. They buy the powder, but the rest is manufactured at the factory and not outsourced.

Aguila Ammunition also manufactures 5.56 ammunition with 55 grain bullet.
