[SHOT 2019] Hurricane Butterfly HK416 Pistol

The HK416 is somewhat of an icon in the firearms industry. Due to the fact the HK416 is the military/LE designation they are typically select fire and not available to civilians. Heckler & Koch has the civilian version MR556 and MR223 and are semi-auto versions of the HK416. But ask any HK fan, it is not the same. Hurricane Butterfly has imported a small batch of HK416 semi auto pistols but be prepared for some sticker shock.

Many HK fans are purists. They don’t accept substitutes and stick to the HK slogan “No Compromise”. I have found that they can be extremely critical of what parts you have in an HK gun and the HK416 is one of those guns that people love to nitpick.

For those of you who don’t know, there were a handful of actual HK416D SF that were imported into the US as NFA SBRs. More importantly they are semi auto only. They were imported for a law enforcement department and then later sold to an FFL. An even smaller number of these guns were removed from the NFA registry. These guns were sold from $14k-$30k USD.

Hurricane Butterfly built and imported semi auto HK416 pistols into the US. Chambered in 5.56×45. Below you can see their importer markings.

Jason Wong of Hurricane Butterfly showed me the internals of his HK416 pistol. He is using an HK buffer but is using a third party buffer spring that is stiffer than a standard AR15 buffer spring. It matches the factory HK buffer spring rate.

The bolt is a German HK bolt.

The bolt carrier is also from an HK416. The MR556 bolts have a recess cut into the side near the breech face. It will also work with a drop in auto sear.

The only major difference between the HB 416 and a real HK 416 is the barrel. HB is using Lothar Walther barrel blanks and is having them machined in Switzerland. There is a slight difference in the lower receiver as well. It does not have the front magwell markings and it has two holes, on on each side. Those holes are actually for the HK416C. The C variant had a collapsing stock and HK made retaining rings that capture the ends of the collapsing stock bars.

They were completed as pistols and imported into the US.

No comes time for sticker shock. These HK416 pistols are not cheap. Hurricane Butterfly is charging $12,500 per gun. While that may seem ridiculous, Hurricane Butterfly has sold out of their first units.

He is working on getting more made so stay tuned.
