RifleKühl from MagnetoSpeed, and similar products to cool your barrel

    The Magnetospeed chronographs are probably one of the best on the market.

    At SHOT Show Magnetospeed will release a new product called the RifleKühl (“RifleCooler”).

    If you’re headed to Shot Show 2019, make sure to swing by and see the MagnetoSpeed team at Booth 406. We’ll be releasing final details on one of our newest products the RifleKühl, along with a few other surprises.

    At the time of writing the RifleKühl hasn’t been officially released, but here is what we know so far (subject to change):

    “Barrel Cooling by Magnetospeed”

    * Retractable Nozzle – Locks in collapsed position for compact storage. Spring loaded for easy extension in action.

    * Magnetic – Strong neodymium magnet keeps devide in secure action.

    * Replaceable 50 micron filter

    * Chamber Seal – Seals against chamber for most efficient air flow.

    * 3+ Hour Run – CR123 Lithium battery included

    * Belt Clip. Metal clip on backside.

    It is great with new development and new products. However some seem to think that this type of product is brand new. As with many things, it is not. It may prove to make things better than others, but there are already a few products around. Below are a few I know about, I am sure there may be more out there:

    Ulf Hednar – Skytterlinken Norway

    Company Skytterlinken AS in Norway has a brand called Ulf Hednar (Viking Warriors) with a similar barrel cooler, which has been on the market for a while.

    It is called the UH650 Barrel Flow, and cost about 39 USD. Ulf Hednar also produce a lot of other specialty products for PRS and long range shooting.

    Here is the link if you want to look closer: https://www.skytterlinken.no/lopsvifte

    You can see how Ulf Hednar’s system works in the video below:

    “This powerful fan removes effective potential corrosive powder gas from barrel and silencer. With this you will also cool down the barrel and silencer in half the time!”

    WieBad – Texas

    Probably more known in the USA, especially for their shooting support bags, WieBad out of Texas has a product called BarrelCool.

    It’s priced at $34.99 and combines the safety of a chamber flag and a fan to cool your barrel on your rifle. Three CR123A batteries are needed to keep it running.

    The WieBad BarrelCool can be found here: https://wiebad.mybigcommerce.com/barrelcool/

    The idea of using a chamber flag like fan is pretty neat.

    Battery Life seems to be an issue with these products (I judge this by comments across the field as I investigated some of these products). Magnetospeed addressed these issues with a statement on Facebook:

    We wanted to clarify a few concerns about the battery life. The listed 3+ hours of run time, is the expected continuous on time from the included battery before there is any decrease in performance. After that the unit will continue to operate for several hours with decreasing airflow. Based on much of the testing we have done, which will be released in the future, we anticipate easily getting 50 “cooling sessions” out of the included CR123 Lithium before needing to be replaced. We appreciate all the interest and look forward to getting these on the market soon.

    What do you think? Are these type of coolers handy and helpful or just another gadget without a purpose?
