POTD: Sniper Patrol

Today’s Photo (above) shows Cpl. Martin Vara, a scout sniper with Battalion Landing Team 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 11:th Marine Expeditionary Unit, as he patrols during a pre-deployment training exercise.

The location is at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms, California, during late 2018.

According to the US Marines, a scout sniper is “a highly skilled in field craft and marksmanship that delivers long range precision fire on selected targets from concealed positions in support of combat operations“.

Note that all the M4 rifles pictured have sound suppressors, with quick-detach. I think it’s a Knights Armament QDSS NT4, with a video here.

You can read more about  the Marines going suppressed in Matthew Moss’ article.

The photos are all taken by U.S. Marine Corps photo by Lance Cpl. Dalton S. Swanbeck.

Below: Laser Range Finder are important to know the distance to your target, or targets. Here you can see Lance Cpl. Ryan Volden, a rifleman with Battalion Landing Team 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (11th MEU), operating a Vector 21B Compact Laser Range Finder.

The patrol consisted of a movement to an observation post, where the Marines could provide over-watch from key terrain for the maneuver element below.
