POTD: M109 Howitzer

Today’s Photo gives you a look down the 155 mm barrel of the M126 attached to the M109 Howitzer.

It’s nice and shiny, as it has just been cleaned. I keep complaining about cleaning my .223 and .308 barrels, but I should probably shut up as the 155 mm looks like a full-day job.

The M109 is a 155 mm turreted self-propelled howitzer, Made in the USA.

It’s been around since the early 1960s, with several different upgrade programs of course and the M109A7 being the latest.

You can see some serials and the year of production 1994 (assuming) of this unit, at the top of the barrel. It’s been around for 25 years, just imagine its career.

The M109 needs a crew of four and with the latest rounds (XM1113) it can reach up to 40 kilometer (that’s 25 miles), with indirect fire.
