@Emfourty Gasmask I follow a big group with mostly wild hog hunters in Texas, and a lot of guys are dumping sbr 300 blackouts for sbr 6.8 SPC or 6.5 Grendel. Not saying that makes sense or not that’s just what I’ve noticed a lot of them are doing.

@Andy1077 It does make sense. 300BLK just doesn't have the right combination of weight, sectional density, and speed to take down **hogs** reliably in SBR format. 6.8SPC/6.5G do, down to certain barrel lengths. There are lots of barrels around ~12" that put out the numbers to make consistent one shot drops on pigs.

Right tool for the job situation. Yes a sledge and a carpenter hammer can be used to do anything you'd need a hammer for, but if you do a lot of drywall, why not get a drywall hammer. Heh, ham-mer.

@Emfourty Gasmask There's a massive split in 6.5G ammo. There is a lot of match grade brass cased stuff that costs over 50 cents a round, but there is also a lot of cheap bimetal steel cased FMJ/HP that's a great bargain for good BC and sectional density in bulk.

6.5G does perform better with 16+" barrels, but so does 5.56/223, and yet there's no end to people doing SBRs with them. 6.5G bullets have a greater cross sectional area than 5.56, by about 40% IIRC. This allows them to be accelerated more by shorter barrel lengths (directly related to how 300BLK performs better than 556 as barrels get shorter than 10"), and the greater case capacity still translates to more go, even if a lot of it is wasted.

@JSandMath Makes sense, I’ve never hunted hogs so like I said I wouldn’t know if it’s a good idea or not. I mainly just follow the page for bi-weekly “6.5 vs 6.8” debate that gets stirred up.

@Emfourty Gasmask 6.5 relies more on having a very good BC than a lot of speed, and the good BC remains no matter the barrel.

@Emfourty Gasmask A little while back David Fortier had a good write up on a build he did with 12.5" I think. I think he wanted 1000 ft-lbs of energy at 300m or something, and it worked out well for him. Might have been in one of those Guns & Ammo AR-15 Special Editions.

Anyway, I had the same initial reaction, but it was a good read and I appreciated the fact he was going for a certain performance value in how he made his choices. Not a dig at this builder at all--just offering that to you. If you find the article, it might make sense (or not). I just found it to be pretty good.

@JSandMath I'd rather someone make an SBR/pistol 6.5 Grendel than a SBR/pistol 5.56.

@Emfourty Gasmask Yup, my first Grendel upper has a 24” barrel and the thought was for my son to try shooting long distance without huge investment. And last spring I built a 16” upper that’s been pretty fun and my rebuilt shoulder can tolerate the recoil. But never thought of a pistol until I got an email ad for one from Alexander Arms last month. I can shoot full power 300BLK through my pistol build but not sure I’d want to try full power Grendel in a pistol. Maybe if subsonic Grendel is possible?
