POTD: Fire-and-Forget Javelin

Troopers assigned to 4th Squadron, 3rd Cavalry Regiment, fire a Javelin anti-tank missile during a live fire exercise in Iraq, Oct. 17, 2018. The 3rd Cavalry Regiment is deployed in support of Operation Inherent Resolve, working by, with and through the Iraqi Security Forces and Coalition partners to defeat ISIS in areas of Iraq and Syria.

In today’s Photos we can see the anti-tank missile of the FGM-148 Javelin being fired in various situations.

The system is man-portable and Made in the USA. The user can take cover once the missile has been fired, as the system uses an automatic infrared guidance system instead of a wire-guidance.

The Javelin’s HEAT warhead strikes from above, so it can beat modern battle tanks and fortifications from above where they typically have a weaker armor. The missile is said to be effective out to approximately 3 miles.

The Javelin has been in service sine 1996 and is build by Raytheon and Lockheed Martin.

The complete system weighs around 50 lb (23 kg), so it’s man-portable but nothing you’re going to run around with on the battlefield.

According to Wikipedia, the cost of a missile (only) is US$174,000, but if you hit it’s probably PRICELESS.
