The Ruger Precision Rifle (RPR) has expanded its caliber offerings into the .338 Lapua Magnum and .300 Winchester Magnum for some more thunder out of the popular platform. The introduction of these new cartridges brings shooters the same familiar weapon system in the RPR, but with a lot more heft to it. These magnum RPR offerings are longer, heavier and quite a bit more expensive.

Whereas the original RPR in 6mm Creedmoor, 6.5 Creedmoor and .308 Winchester had 24″ barrels the new magnum rifles will boast 26″ barrels. The weight also jumps from a manageable 10 pounds to a considerable 15.2 pounds in the .338 Lapua and .300 Win Mag packages. The rest of the essential specs can be read below:

    • Barrel: 26” Cold-Hammer Forged w/ 5R Rifling
    • Twist Rate: 1 in 9.375” RH – .338 Lapua Mag | 1 in 9” RH .300 Win Mag
    • Finish: Type III Hard Coat Anodized
    • Overall Length: 49” – 52.5”
    • Weight: 15.2 Pounds
    • MSRP: $2,099

The original caliber set of Precision Rifles had an MSRP $1,599 so you are seeing a $500 jump into these new cartridges. A pretty significant difference in price for those without a discerning eye. Even to an experienced shooter and firearm enthusiast it might be difficult to recognize the correlating increase in value. For a more deep dive into the differences between the original Precision Rifles and these new ones Ruger goes into further detail below.

    • Ruger® Precision MSR stock features a bottom Picatinny rail and soft rubber buttpad. The left-folding stock hinge accepts any AR-style stock. Length of pull and comb height are adjustable.
    • Heavy-contour (.875″ at the muzzle) barrel features a Ruger Precision® Rifle Magnum Muzzle Brake with tunable compensator to effectively reduce recoil and muzzle jump.
    • 18″ free-float handguard is made of hard anodized aluminum and features Magpul® M-LOK® accessory attachment slots on all four sides for improved scope clearance for long-range scopes and easy mounting of M-LOK-compatible rails and accessories.

So with the addition of these new cartridges in the .338 Lapua Magnum and .300 Winchester Magnum, what does everyone think? Are you a fan of big-bore, precision rifles? Is this a bit of overkill in this platform and were you already satisfied with the 6.5 Creedmoor? Let us know your thoughts in the Comments below! We always appreciate your feedback.
