This type of business has been around for quite a while in the photography industry, allowing artists to pay a smallish fee to rent that one amazing lens while on vacation in the Pacific Northwest. It’s a new concept in the firearms world, however, and it’s slightly different with Vulcan Circle.

Armory Tiers

Vulcan Circle is a membership service providing optics on a three-month rotational basis. Subscriptions start at $45.00 per month and can be upgraded or canceled at any time.  Each of the three tiers unlocks higher priced optics for the subscriber.

In addition to the optics service, Vulcan Circle also offers an interesting rewards program called Vulcan Honors.  The user earns points every month and every time they return an optic in good condition.  These points can be redeemed for gear.  The rewards program offers items from Streamlight, Yeti Coolers, and Garmin just to name a few.

I know what you’re thinking: what kind of optics are we talking about, and what’s the catch? Vulcan Circle currently offers scopes from Leupold, Vortex, Nightforce, Swarovski, Tangent Theta, US Optics, March, Steiner, and Kahles.  They also offer red dot optics from Aimpoint, Eotech, Trijicon, Leupold, and Meprolight. This is only about half of their offerings, so as you can see there is quite a selection.

As far as “the catch” goes, you could be charged the entire retail value of the optic if you lose it, it gets stolen, or if it gets damaged.  Vulcan Circle retains the right to determine what constitutes a “damaged” optic.  I also couldn’t determine from their website whether the Armory tier you choose is the only monthly fee you pay or if there is a monthly membership fee in addition to the Armory fee.  The subscriber will also pay a security deposit equal to the first month’s membership fee.  Additionally, I was not able to determine from their website whether the user pays for shipping when they return the optic or if shipping both directions is included in the price.
