The Thompson sub-machine gun is one of my favorite looking firearms of all-time. The “Chicago Typewriter”, or “Tommy Gun” is one of the most iconic guns ever. You’ll always be able to spot a Thompson variant in most mobster movies and WWII flicks. While the Thompson was first introduced in 1918, they’re actually still being produced by Auto-Ordnance, along with 1911s and M1 Carbines.

Well Auto-Ordnance recently released a new model semi-auto Thompson chambered in 9mm. I know, that probably seems like sacrilege to many Tommy Gun fans. If you’re actually going to shoot this thing often the cost savings of shooting 9mm vs .45 acp might make sense. According to Auto-Ordnance their new 9mm Thompson is an all original design by their engineers but is based off the original .45 acp model.

The grip, fore grip and buttstock are made from American Walnut while the receiver and frame are machined aluminum. They currently have two models available, the 1927A-1C Lightweight model (Chicago Typewriter style) and the M1 Lightweight Carbine (WWII style).

The 1927A-1C Lightweight model has a vertical foregrip, 16.5″ finned barrel and a compensator. Even though they call it a Lightweight model it’s listed as 13 lbs, the same as their .45 acp model. Perhaps that’s just a typo. The 1927A-1C has an MSRP of $1364.

The M1 Lightweight Carbine model has no compensator, an M1 style foregrip, a side bolt and non-finned 16.5″ barrel. It weights in at a much lighter 8 lbs. The M1 Lightweight Carbine has an MSRP of $1279. Both models will include a 20-round stick magazine.

Since 1915, the “Tommy Gun” has been manufactured in .45 ACP. Kahr Firearms Group brought innovation to life when they recently announced plans for the 9mm Thompsonmodel T5-9L20. The 9mm version is an original design by Thompson Auto-Ordnance in-house engineers, using the original Thompson platform. After much anticipation, the 9mmThompson is now shipping.

The 9mm model features all the classic details of John Thompson‘s original. The frame and receiver are machined from a solid billet of aluminum, and the buttstock, grip and vertical fore grip are all made from American Walnut. The T5-9L20 is offered with one 20-round stick magazine. The finned barrel measures 16.5 inches and 18 inches with the compensator. It has an overall length of 41 inches and features a front blade sight and an open rear adjustable. The MSRP is $1364.
