Humongous Suppressors by Hausken of Norway

Recently, I came across a Norwegian suppressor manufacturing company called Hausken. By visiting their website you will find several suppressor offerings which mostly utilize a reflex design where the suppressor is partially telescoped over the barrel – pretty typical design for the European suppressors. At first, it doesn’t seem that there is anything interesting there in terms of the design of these cans. However, what caught my attention is the dimensions of the Hausken Whisper suppressor … it is huge!

If you visit the company’s website, you may not be able to immediately get an idea about the size of this suppressor because the website doesn’t quite give you a visual size reference. But when you look at the numbers, you’ll discover that this monster has a 70 mm diameter tube – about 2 3/4″. The Hausken Whisper suppressor only adds 140 mm (5.5″) to the length of the rifle, but its overall length can be from 228mm (about 9″) to 506 mm (about 20″). Just imagine a 2 3/4″ thick and 20″ long suppressor! The telescoping part of this suppressor is available in several size options between these extremes, in 50mm (2″) increments. It is unclear whether this is a modular design and the telescoping portion can be removed and replaced with another one (thus changing the lengths) or if these size options mean separate cans.

Reportedly the Hausken Whisper suppressor is primarily designed for hunting rifles of up to .458 caliber. The possibility of using with big bore rifle calibers explains the extraordinarily large dimensions of this suppressor. We’ve reached out to the company for more information concerning this can. Once they reply, I’ll update this article with the new information.

What do you think about the Hausken Whisper suppressor? Do you think its dimensions and weight are reasonable to mount it to your big bore hunting rifle?

I like the idea of reflex suppressors for compactness but I haven't seen any that are quick detach. Suppressor volume does not contribute much beyond a certain minimum. For example, .22lr fired through a 5.56 can is not much quieter than a rimfire can with half the volume. But volume is more important than actual internal geometry for a cartridge with a large powder charge like a .458 Winchester.

@Kelly Harbeson I'd also wonder about the mounting, and what (if any) effect it has on the outside of the barrel. Since the barrel is literally inside the can, I would hope it wouldn't be damaged by contact with the can or perhaps the retained heat build-up inside the can. The barrel itself isn't going to cool as quickly with a can around it.

You might as well put a glass pack on your barrel.
