Federal Premium Adjusting Valkyrie Sierra MatchKing Loads

A dedicated TFB reader sent in a notice about Federal Premium’s .224 Valkyrie Sierra MatchKing apparently undergoing some adjustments. According to a letter issued recently, Federal suggests using three alternative loads while they fine tune the 90-grain Sierra MatchKing flagship. A brief discussion with a firearms manufacturer involved in the initial Valkyrie development said that a survey was sent out last month requesting information about any abnormalities in the .224 Valkyrie Sierra MatchKing loads. Although this particular manufacturer wasn’t having any issues, Federal must have received information that lead to the need for an adjustment.

TFB reached out to Federal for an additional comment on the issued letter:

Every product introduction comes with some hiccups with some being more frontal than others. The Federal team is working on full resolution of this issue, and stands behind the products we produce. If customers are experiencing any issues, we encourage them to contact our Tech Services team, at the phone number listed in the header of the letter. – Federal Premium Communications Manager

Kudos to a large manufacturer for being proactive. It isn’t always easy to announce the need for changes in a brand new product. If anything changes, we will keep you posted.

Federal Premium Adjusting Valkyrie Sierra MatchKing Loads

Dear Valued Customer,

We appreciate your support of our new, breakthrough .224 Valkyrie caliber. This award winning product pushes the boundaries of long range shooting and is the first 1,300-yard supersonic MSR-15 cartridge. We’ve been extremely pleased with the adoption of this round and thank you for joining the many shooters who are now shooting .224 Valkyrie.

As with any product innovation that pushes performance boundaries, there are often adjustments that need to be made to the offering to continually improve. We have found that some of our Sierra 90-grain MatchKing rounds are not performing to the accuracy levels we expect. Although they are still shooting MOA out of our test barrels and will function to our specifications, we hold our Premium Gold Medal products to the highest standard. As a result, we are recommending the following products as we work to improve the MatchKing load.

AE224VLK1: American Eagle 75-grain TMJ

F224VLKMSR1: Fusion 90-grain Bonded Soft Point

P224VLKBT1: Premium Nosler 60-grain Ballistic Tip

We’re excited to let you know that more Gold Medal offerings are in development and will be announced later this year.

Keep pulling the trigger and supporting the shooting sports!

Wasn't there supposed to be a 100gr match grade loading released at some point? that might actually get the 1,300 yard claim.

@No one Likely to have it "postponed", potentially for long time.

My guess is that Vitor Roma's comment is spot on. Valk's perk is ability to run incredibly heavy .223cal bullets, but with weight comes twist requirement, and something like 1:6 (just a wild guess on my part, maybe 1:6.5 sufficient for 95gr SMK will do) is agressive and will take time for rifle manufacturers to switch to.

Judging by reviews on Federal's site, they have more pressing issues with Valkyrie's launch, though some are probably not (ed: entirely) their fault (incredibly poor reliability in Savage MSR etc.)

An elaborate way of saying "Folks, we have had Charlie Foxtrot in production and QC for some time, and we are coming down on the issue hard because top management is out to fry our backsides if we botch otherwise successful product launch. Please stay tuned.".
