As we gear up for the NRA Show in Dallas, Texas from May 4th – 6th we get some completely unexpected news. Springfield Armory has announced 2 new NFA firearms for consumers to build off of their increasingly popular SAINT line of modern sporting rifles. These are short-barreled rifle (SBR) derivatives of what are likely the 2 most popular rifles in that line-up. We now have the SAINT Edge SBR and the SAINT M-LOK Free-Float Handguard SBR.

This SBR is a more compact version of the full-size rifle many of us have come to know. It boasts many of the premium features present throughout the entire SAINT portfolio such as a Nickel-Boron Trigger, Bravo Company furniture and multiple proprietary SA (Springfield Armory) components.

Springfield Armory provides this short ‘n sweet, encompassing statement about the new SAINT M-LOK Free-Float Handguard SBR:

Springfield Armory’s SAINT AR-15 series expands to include the SAINT SBR… For those looking for a light, tight and quick-handling short-barreled rifle, the SAINT SBR is the ultimate hard use carbine.

The SAINT Edge SBR, like the full-fledged rifle, is the crème de la crème of the SAINT firearms. Without a solid foundation, no firearm has a chance for durability, functionality or accuracy. So with Springfield Armory’s billet lower they set the tone immediately for this SBR.

The SAINT EDGE SBR billet lower features QD mounts machined into the receiver and weight reducing cuts that lighten it by two ounces. An ambidextrous 90-degree safety and extended mid-sized charging handle add features that are popular among tactical shooters. The trigger is an exclusive proprietary short-reset single stage design with a crisp and precise feel. A Bravo Company stock, pistol grip and Magpul Gen M3 PMAG finish off this combat grade short-barreled rifle.

The billet lower is a huge plus for consumers, but that is not the only piece to this SBR puzzle worth recognizing. The complete specification listing for the SAINT Edge SBR, as provided by Springfield Armory, can be read below:

  • Barrel: 11.5” LW CMV Melonite Finish Internally & Externally, A2 Flash Hider, 1:8” Twist
  • Trigger: SA Proprietary. Modular Match-grade Short Reset Single Stage
  • Upper Receiver: SA Forged Type III Hard Coat Anodized Aircraft Grade 7075 T6 Aluminum Flat Top w/ Forward Assist & M4 Feed Ramps
  • Lower Receiver: SA Billet Type III Hard Coat Anodized Aircraft Grade 7075 T6 Aluminum w/ Accu-Tite™ Tension System & Receiver End Plate w/ QD Swivel Attachment
  • Handguard: Full Length Aluminum Free Float Handguard w/ M-Lok Attachment Points
  • Gas System: SA Proprietary Low Profile Carbine Length Adjustable Gas Block
  • Receiver Extension: Mil-Spec Carbine, 7075 T6 Type III Hard Anodized Aluminum
  • Bolt-Carrier Group: Enhanced M16 Melonite Finish, MPT w/ 9310 Steel Bolt
  • Buffer Assembly: Carbine “H” Heavy Tungsten Buffer
  • Charging Handle: Mid-Size
  • Stock: Bravo Company Gunfighter, Mod 0 SOPMOD
  • Safety Switch: Single-Sided, 90° Throw
  • Trigger Guard: Integral to Receiver
  • Pistol Grip: Bravo Company Gunfighter Mod 3
  • Length: 27.5” (Collapsed) / 30.75” (Extended)
  • Weight: 5 Lbs. 10 Oz. (Without Magazine)

The takeaway message for this SBR is it is lighter, stronger and gets a huge upgrade in curb appeal from the billet lower. The MSRP for the SAINT Edge SBR is benchmarked at $1,299.

There are far too many similar products on the market for me to ever consider a Springfield Armory!

I have avoided the whole Springfield and RRA debacle. I have my personal feelings about how it went down and they are paying accordingly.

But I gotta say…Springfield pushing NFA items? After what happened? Man, that's some next level out-of-touch decision making right there.

    Pass.
