Good afternoon dear readers. Welcome to Silencer Saturday, where the only good barrel is a threaded barrel. Today we will stay small with a quick look at the fun of owning suppressed pocket pistols – specifically the GLOCK 43 with the Thompson Machine Poseidon. Thankfully the weather is improving up here in God’s Country – which means time to catch up on reviews and outside imagery rather than sterile white backgrounds.

I frequently describe the affliction that is Silencerosis as a sort of evolution. New buyers focus on the absolute quietest setup possible while veteran owners look to suppress every gun they own with a mission-appropriate* suppressor, even if it means sacrificing decibels for a smaller package. The GLOCK 43 is no where near the smallest pocket gun that can be suppressed, but I set out to find a perfectly-sized 9mm silencer – the Poseidon from Thompson Machine fits all of my G43 needs.

* A “mission” can be anything from possible defensive situations or pure range fun. You don’t have to be 007 to enjoy smaller suppressors.

The beauty of most micro cans is that they don’t usually require a booster (Nielsen Device) to assist in cycling tilting barrel action handguns. This saves on weight, cost and most importantly length when you are attempting to build the smallest suppressed package possible. The Thompson Poseidon is a hybrid silencer that uses a short monocore baffle system followed by a single rubber wipe. The wipe is good for about 40-100 rounds before it needs replacing, but the beauty of a hybrid can with a monocore is that you can keep shooting without a functional wipe, just with reduced suppression levels.

At only 4.125” long by 1.25” in diameter and weighing in at a feather-light 3.8oz, the Poseidon offers sound suppression comparable to industry-leading silencers that are twice its size and weight. Using artificial environment and wipe technology along with a proprietary mono-baffle stack, the Poseidon features a unique design that helps to seal in the end-user’s ablative medium of choice until the suppressor is used; thus eliminating a major downside of wet suppressors. In other words, your ablative medium won’t run out in your pocket! As an added selling point, the Thompson Machine Poseidon is also a true multi-caliber suppressor, and is very quiet on .22lr, .25acp, .32acp, 9x18mm, and .380acp host weapons. The Poseidon easily and fully disassembles for cleaning, and includes the necessary take-down tools at no extra charge. The Poseidon 9mm is available in 1/2-28, 1/2-36, or 13.5x1LH thread patterns.

Silencing the GLOCK 43

Suppressors like the Poseidon work best when run wet (using an ablative media to slow and cool expanding gasses). I still owe you all an ablative media comparison, but at the moment I prefer Inland Manufacturing’s dB Foam for the sole reason that it tends to stay put inside the silencer instead of spilling out the muzzle. Filling the Poseidon with dB Foam lasts for about 12 rounds, with the suppression reduced with each subsequent shot.

Sure, the rubber wipe takes a beating, but it holds up better than you’d expect. Unfortunately, the ATF considers wipes to be silencer parts, so technically replacing them on your own is not allowed (even if it’s a simple process). But, any FFL can order replacement wipes from Thompson and instal them for you in less than a minute.

I’m really liking this Federal Premium Syntech range ammunition for shooting suppressed – it’s both clean and quiet, staying subsonic in all but the longest barrels. The Hydra-Shok is a supersonic round, but is well suited for the G43 as a personal protection round.

There are three chambers in the Poseidon’s monocore, just enough to keep it really quiet with subsonic ammunition and a few squirts of liquid or foam.

As an aside, the G43 received a sight upgrade from XS Sights. The new F8 Sights are bright, usable and easy to install. Brownells has them in stock here.

When using the right ammunition, a little ablative and with a fresh wipe, the Thompson Poseidon is nearly as quiet as any quality full sized silencer. It’s small, lightweight and easy to maintain. Most of all, when paired with a subcompact, pocket-sized pistol, it is a lot of fun in a tiny package.

Breitbart News: Trump DOJ Seeks to Hasten ‘Approval Process’ for Suppressors, Other NFA-Regulated Devices

President Trump’s Department of Justice (DOJ) wants to spend $13.2 million to hasten the “approval process” for suppressors and other items regulated under the National Firearms Act (1934).
The goal is to address a workload that has seen approval times for sales go from two months to eight months or more in recent years.

For example, to acquire suppressor an individual goes into a gun store, picks out a suppressor, fills out forms for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), acquires passport photos, gets fingerprinted, and writes a check for $200, payable to the ATF. The forms, money, photos, and fingerprints are mailed to the ATF and the buyer waits roughly eight months to hear back. Following that approval time the buyer can pick up his suppressor, which is registered with the ATF.
