Swarovski from Austria take an interesting approach at this year’s IWA. When almost everything and anything has been invented already, why not invent a rifle scope that makes things appear smaller than they are?
Sounds stupid?
Well, hold on for a second because I kind of buy the idea. But, in my opinion it is only usable for hunting in some instances like multiple targets like hog hunting, or on the driven hunt.
For target shooting I think it would work for practical shooting like IPSC Mini Rifle (.22LR) and IPSC Pistol Caliber Carbine/Competition. Perhaps a steel challenge as well, if anyone would put a rifle scope like this? However, practical shooting stages are rarely built so that this type of sight would excel – i.e. a lot of targets side-by-side where you can use the extra field of view.
However, the 0,75 (or less than 1x) magnification may not work for all eyes. Imagine using both eyes and one eye seeing 1:1 and the other one less.
I tried it briefly, and I think it could work for me. However, the reticles will have a drawback for my target shooting on pretty much all distances beyond 150 yards.
You can only get this sight with a dot or the 4A-IF reticle, which is more like the “German four”.
One benefit is that you get an excellent field of view. Swarovski claim that you get 30% more field of view with the 0,75 setting.
